The History of Faith, Hope & Charity COGIC

On Sunday, July 16, 1989, Pastor Donald K. Barrett's vision came into fruition. Faith, Hope & Charity Church of God In Christ "was born". At the opening Sunday service, an approximate one hundred (100) well-wishers were in attendance at the West Hall Banquet Facility of Dolton, Illinois to celebrate the opening. Services were held at the West Hall for about two and one-half months.

In early October of that same year, the church services were moved to The Dorchester Banquet/Business Center, also located in Dolton, Illinois, and remained there until the move to the present church home. Our last service at the Dorchester was held on Sunday, February 24, 1991.

In early October, Pastor Barrett met with then Superintendent Ocie Booker and relayed to him his frustrations and concerns in finding a permanent home for the Faith, Hope & Charity church family. Supt. Booker informed Pastor Barrett that there was a possibility of a church sale in Harvey, Illinois. Pastor Barrett took a "ride by" the church and found it to be a lovely place. After a special meeting was called with the church membership, he contacted the parties responsible for the sale of this beautiful church known then as the First Christian Science of Harvey. Shortly thereafter, negotiations began for the purchase of the building.

The members of Faith, Hope & Charity Church of God In Christ began a building fund drive and worked diligently and untiringly during the course of the year in an effort to raise the down payment for their new church home. In about a year's time, the members had raised close to $20,000.

After several attempts to secure a loan from one bank for the purchase of the church failed, (due to the fact that the church had not been in existence for a long period of time, therefore, not having a "track record"), Pastor Barrett then contacted out then Jurisdictional Prelate, the late Bishop Louis Henry Ford (First Jurisdiction Illinois), who was also the International Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, informing him of our unfortunate encounter.

Bishop Ford directed Pastor Barrett to the Drexel Bank in Chicago. With the support of Bishop Ford and First Jurisdiction, Pastor Barrett and the Faith, Hope & Charity church family were able to secure the loan from the Drexel Bank for the purchase of the church property at 15438 S. Myrtle Avenue, Harvey, Illinois presently known as the Faith, Hope & Charity Church of God in Christ!
