The F-14 Tomcot is a supersonic, twin-engine, variable sweep wing, two-place fighter designed to attack and destroy enemy aircraft at night and in all weather conditions.
It can track up to 24 targets simultaneously with its advanced weapons control systems. The F-14 has the ablity to attack six with Phoenix AIM-54A missles while continuing to scan the airspace. The tomcats armament also includes a mix of other air intercept missiles, rockets and bombs.
The tomcat was manufactered by Grumman Aircraft Corporation, the F-14 employs variable geometry wings to optimize aircraft performance throghout the flight envelope. The multiple task of navigation, target acquisition, electronic counter measures (ECM), and weapons firing are divided between the pilot and radar intercept or (RIO). Overall, the Navy's Grumman F-14 Tomcat is without equal among today's Free world fighters. The tomcat has: Six long-range AIM-54A Phoenix missiles can be guided against six separate threat aircraft at long range by the F-14's AWG-9 weapons control systems. For medium-range combat, Sparrow missiles are carried; Sidewinders and a M61-A1 Vulcan Cannon are available for dogfighting. The F-14 has, LANTIRN targeting system that allows delivery of various laser-guided bombs for precision strikes in air-to-ground combat missions.
The tomcat's variable-sweep wings give the F-14 a combat maneuvering capability that could not have been achieved with a "standard" fixed planform wing. the variable sweep wings are set at 20 degrees for take-off, loitering and landing, they automatically change to a maximum sweep of 68 degrees, in which reduces drag for high subsonic to supersonic speeds. The wings are swept at 75 degrees for aircraft carrier stowage.
The F-14B and the F-14D have two General Electric F110-GE-400 Turbofan engines, rated at 72kN and 120kN with afterburn. There are five internal fuel tanks, which carry 9,000 liters and are located in the fixed section and the outer section of the wings, and in the rear section of the fuselage between the engines. The tomcat entered the fleet in 1973, in which it replaced the f-4 Phantom two. In 1995, the Tomcat when through an upgrade program to incorporate new didital avionics and weapon system improvements.
