| FIREFIGHTER'S PERSPECTIVE | |||||||||
| Recently the Jersey City Fire Department was unwillfully brought into a political race by a "citizen" on a full page add. This was one firefighter's reply.... Dear Mrs. Romano, I read your political comment in the Jersey Journal where you said in a calculated way -- that firefighters receive this great salary to eat, sleep, lift weights and sun themselves (at the overhead door). That is when I thought I recognized you. You're the woman who gave a drink to my fellow firefighter as he sat on the curb coughing up smoke he had taken in saving your neighbor's house.... No, You must be the woman who thanked us for saving her precious momentos when that pipe broke at 3 A.M. in February.... Or maybe you are the mother whose son my Captain found under the bed and was brought back to life by other Firefighters on the scene.... Wait---I remember you -- you came up to me with a tear in your eye as I fought off my own -- while we put to rest a Brother Firefighter, while his wife and young son listened as the bagpipers played "Amazing Grace." Then you said, "You guys are the best, God Bless You." No, I guess it wasn't you...I don't know you...But that's all right You don't know us either... Written by Firefighter Robert Fox, Truck Company 9, Group C, Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department Reprinted from "The Jersey Journal" June 16, 1998. A local Jersey City Newspaper |
