By Linnea Danielsen & DeLynne Satimore Taking a spin on Shakespeare's Hamlet, the phrase "To Fold or Not to Fold" actually is a good question. This is true because Scottish Folds are born with "normal", straight ears. Between 13 and 23 days, those kittens that will have a folded ear start to develop a crimp in the pinna, and the ear begins to fold. Breeders must play a waiting game to see if the ears will fold and to what degree. There are also varying degrees of fold to a cat’s ears. Some have airplane ears, some have floppy or loosely folded ears, and some are very tightly folded.
Susie, the original fold, was what is termed a loose fold. This means the tips of her ears bent forward about halfway up the ear. These cats are less desirable for competitive showing. It is not unheard of for the ears to unfold. Usually, it is in reaction to a variety of stresses. They can vary from tightly folded, to “airplane” ears, to completely unfolded ones. For example……….
However, the number of folded cats becoming “undone” has lessened as the breed is more established.
