This is INSTALLMENT 3 of the Journal of Erasmux Hix
I have the honor to offer for your perusal and education the Journal of Erasmus Hix. It is of 176 pages. Because this is a free web site we have always been limited in space, therefore while it may vary a little, only about 15 to 20 pages per month will be available on line.
From June 1855 through September 1856 Erasmus was a student at the Masonic College in Lexington where he kept a journal of daily life and the events local regional and national that would soon split the county apart.
He was acquainted with the Waddel family of Pony Express fame, knew Alonzo Slayback who would fight for Missouri and after the war, go to Mexico with General Price. He describes in detail life in and around Missouri and Kansas You will read about Storm Parties with the young ladies of Lexington society and serenading them for bouquets; how he rode a wagon to Westport then on to Lawrence to participate in the Wakarusa War.
Take for instance this exert from page 106: "I went to the city hotel and found plenty of excitement. Some who had just returned from Kansas said the Abolitionists were determined to burn Leavenworth City and the Southerners were intent on Lawrence. We are expecting news daily. I stayed an hour and came up. I took a blue mass pill and and am now writing."(ed: blue mass was a mercury compound.)
