The Eczema and Dermatitis Cure
The women in my family have suffered from eczema and/or dermatitis for years.
Now, when we experience a flare-up, we follow this regime. It's the ONLY way to end eczema:
The tools:
- Cotton gloves or cotton stockings or cotton t-shirt or whatever cotton wrap you can find that will cover the afflicted skin.
- A prescription creme. We prefer Elocon, but any similar steroid-y thing will work.
- An over-the-counter triple-antibiotic creme. One with a topical analgesic is best for emergency itching/pain relief over infected bits.
- An over-the-counter hydrating creme. We prefer fragrence-free Curel, but Eucarin is also good.
- An over-the-counter antihistimine. Dye-free Benadryl is my favorite, but whatever.
- Any dye-and-fragrence free bath soap. I prefer Pure and Natural.
The regime:
- Cleaning: Get the skin clean during your daily shower, but be sure to rinse, rinse, rinse after soaping to remove all residue.
- Soaking: Daily (twice is better) soak. (Some of us soak the afflicted part in a tub of water, some of us use a bath, but I prefer a long shower because I can adjust the temperature to spray really hot water on the itchy skin.) Really long soak. Until your skin is pickled. Maybe 20 minutes.
- Drying: Pat it dry -- barely. You want your skin to be damp and clean for the treatment, following:
- Treating: During the worst stages, use only the prescription creme and the triple antibiotic creme. Slap it on, generously. Later, when it begins to heal and scab over, use more of the Curel, and less of the steroid.
- Covering: As soon as the creme is on, cover the skin with clean cotton. Your goal here is to protect the skin from carpets, shoes, children, animals, polyester, dirt, bread crumbs, and everything else.
- Emergency itch treatment: If the skin starts a cycle of itching, go ahead and scratch -- up to the count of 10. Then STOP! STOP SCRATCHING! Immediately go soak in really hot or really cold water, and restart the entire regime.
