Guarded Trust (Part 9)
Caroline Benson
"I'm so sorry, Carolyn. I didn't know.I thought you were trying to run
away or something.I didn't know." he spoke quietly, trying to reassure her.
She shook her head slightly.
"You said you'd never hurt me. You said you couldn't. Didn't you hear me
when I cried out?" she accused him. She wasn't mad, just hurt and scared.
"Carolyn, I wasn't thinking, I was upset and getting mad. I didn't know
what I was doing. I'm sorry, that's all I can say." He tried to touch her.
Again, she pulled away from his reach.
"Just, let me be alone for a while." She said quietly. Riddick understood,
even though he didn't like doing so. He nodded and Carolyn stepped around
him finally and went up stairs.
"Shit." Riddick whispered as he sat down on the couch that he had just
thrown Carolyn down on. He took his goggles off and rubbed his eyes. He
felt absolutely horrible about what he had just done. He didn't know what
he would do if Carolyn didn't trust him anymore. It had taken so long for
them to get to this level, and his short temper had ruined it all. It would
take time to repair it, he knew. And he didn't have the slightest clue of
what to do to try to fix things. He was lost.
It had been three days since the operation, but Carolyn now wished she had
never even gotten the surgery done. It was hopeless now, she was again
scared of Riddick and now he was uncomfortable around her. They were back
to square one.
Just like times before, Carolyn avoided interacting with Riddick. She
stayed upstairs mostly, only coming down when it was necessary. Riddick had
approached her a few times, opened his mouth to say something even, but he
always just shook his head and walked off. Carolyn had about given up hope
on ever being comfortable with him. It was almost like both of them had
forgotten the other one.
Carolyn was upstairs in the hot tub, thinking about everything, when she
heard a knock on her door. She jumped and lifted her hand to her chest.
"Yeah?" she said, half-smiling at her jumpiness. Riddick shyly stepped
just inside the door; he looked at the floor sheepishly.
"Could we talk?" he asked, finally looking up at her. She nodded and
motioned for him to come nearer. He slowly crossed the room and kneeled
down beside the tub. He looked at her for a moment. His goggles were
missing, he wasn't wearing them.
Looking her straight in the eyes, he said,
"I'm sorry." Carolyn sighed.
She half smiled,
"Riddick..."
"Don't say it's alright," he interrupted, "it's not alright. I should've
have controlled my temper and I know I hurt you. I am so sorry; I don't
realize when I'm doing things like that. It's like I don't hear or see
anything except my anger. I'm sorry." He started to get up to walk out, but
Carolyn caught his wrist. She paused, and smiled.
"Riddick, I understand." She said. It was that simple, she felt like
everything was alright now. Studying his face, she could tell that he was
thinking the same thing. He moved his hand to hold hers, and pulled on it
slightly. She stood up and Riddick put his hands around her waist and he
lifted her out of the tub. Water dripping off her body, Carolyn stood
directly in front of his massive body. She felt almost insignificant.
Until Riddick stepped toward her, his hands wrapping around her to hold her
close. He gently bent down and kissed her.
It felt so right to her, Carolyn immediately wanted more than just a kiss.
She placed her hands on his arms and gripped them tightly as they
passionately kissed. Riddick held her even tighter. He pulled back and
touched her cheek.
"I'll go shut the front door." He grinned. Carolyn smiled and bit her lip.
As soon as Riddick was out the door and down the stairs, she jumped on the
bed and laid down. She twirled her hair on her fingertips and smiled from
the thoughts that were going through her head. Riddick soon returned.
He
looked at her, sprawled out on the bed waiting. He grinned and pulled his
shirt off. He kicked off his boots and crossed the floor to stand at the
foot of the bed. He studied her up and down, and she smiled as his arousal
grew noticeably. He looked down and chuckled. Bending down slightly, he
slid onto the bed and on top of Carolyn's small body. She wrapped her arms
around his waist and pulled him to her. As they kissed, her hands slid down
his body, down to his zipper. She unbuttoned his pants and unzipped them as
well. He sat up and rolled over so that he could remove them. All that was
left were his tight, black, boxers.
Carolyn rolled on top of him,
straddling his hips. He sat up, and kissed her roughly again, as his hands
unclipped her bikini top. It was discarded onto the floor, and the bottoms
soon followed.
Now Riddick was back on top, his hands easily slid down her body, to grip
her thighs.
"You sure?" he whispered, one hand on the waistline of his boxers. Carolyn
nodded and he tore the things off his body. He kissed her neck and
collarbone. She opened her legs, to give him more room. He pushed up into
her and pumped once, gently. Carolyn's face wrinkled.
"Ouch." She whimpered. He looked worried.
"Wanna stop?" he asked, still inside her. She shook her head.
"No, I'll be alright." Riddick shrugged and pumped again, getting the same
reaction from her, except the verbal whimpering. He hesitated, but kept on
after a look from Carolyn. He plunged in and out slowly at first, but when
Carolyn got better control of her pain, he sped things up. In and out, he
pushed further into her. She gripped his waist tightly. He was concerned
of hurting her, but when the climax was drawing near, he basically forgot.
He pushed in one last time, and groaned. His face relaxed, while Carolyn's
showed her extreme pain.
"Ow!" she whined. She could still feel him inside her, pulsing. His body
relaxed on top of hers, but not so much to smother her. After a few
moments, he caught his breath and rolled off of her.
"Are you alright?" he asked, propping himself up on one elbow. She nodded,
her eyes squeezed shut.
"I think so. I didn't realize it'd hurt like that."
Riddick brushed the
hair out of her face, and kissed her cheek lightly.
"It gets better." He grinned. Carolyn sighed and smiled.
"I hope so."
The rest of the day was spent on the bed, under the sheets. They talked
and laughed, slept and watched each other sleep. Things were fixed and
better than they had been before. And it hadn't taken anything at all
except an apology.
Riddick was awake, while Carolyn slept soundly. He had been watching her
sleep for a while. He had one hand on her stomach, while he was propping
himself up on his other elbow. He watched her chest rise with every breath
she took. Her mouth was slightly open, and Riddick could hear her breathing
softly. He couldn't stop thinking of how much she meant to him, how he
would hate to lose her after all this. He knew he had true feelings for
her, surpassing a simple physical attraction. One thing he wasn't sure of,
what would happen now. Would Carolyn expect a strong relationship, or none
at all? What about marriage? Riddick wondered what she was thinking. When
she was awake, anyway. Right now, he wondered what she was dreaming, if it
was about him. When he was asleep, he saw her. When he was awake, he
couldn't stop thinking of her. Everything reminded him of her. He was
crazy for her. And although Riddick had never experienced the feeling, he
had to admit, he liked it.
Over the next few days, the couple started sharing the bed every night,
held hands when they went out and showed other public signs of affections.
They spent as much time together as possible.
One afternoon, they had just got back from lunch at a restaurant, and now
were seated on the sofa in the living room. Carolyn reached for the remote
to the news screen and hit the power button. A story on some big event was
going off and a Gorgarian newscaster came up.
"Well folks of this fine pleasure planet, we've just got one more story for
you, and it's big news. One murder, very recent, has been committed. The
killer behind it is not yet known, but the PPO force is all over it,
examining everything they can. One woman has stepped forward with some
possible information. Here's a tape of her interview we had earlier."
Carolyn looked at Riddick with a worried expression. His face was stern as
he focused on the screen. A moment later, the hooker, Reba, appeared.
Riddick growled.
"We understand you have a suspect in mind, ma'am?" a voice from behind the
camera said. Reba nodded.
"Could you tell us your name?"
"Oh yea honey, I'm Reba Holden."
"And you live here on Star Field?"
"That's right."
"Where do you work?"
"Well right here baby! You see, I'm a prostitute. It's real good money,
you know, kinda disgraceful, but I can adjust."
"Yea..." the man cleared his voice, "Well, why don't you just tell us what
you think about the murder and who did it."
"Alright hon, well, a while ago I witnessed this big fight. Some woman was
sexually attacked by some creep on the street, right over there." Reba
pointed off screen, "And anyway, she started screamin real loud and all, and
next thing I see, this real big muscular guy runs up and hits the hell outta
that other guy. Knocked a few teeth out too! The girl got knocked
unconscious, and the muscle man took her to a med-lab. He was real
protective, and real hostile too. It just really wouldn't surprise me if he
did it. We didn't have no trouble around here like this until I started
seein him around. He comes around this area a lot, you know."
"Could you give us a description of this "Muscle Man"?" the reporter asked.
"Well, he's about this tall," Reba held her hand above her head, "I see him
in black a whole lot. He's got a shaved head, he wears these black goggles
all the time, he's real big and broad with a whole lot of muscles." She
smiled.
"Thank you very much ma'am." The reporter said. The screen clicked back to
the newscaster. Riddick clenched his fists and Carolyn turned the screen
off.
"What happens now?" she asked nervously.
"We leave." Riddick growled. He didn't look at her.
"Alright." She sighed. Getting up, she kissed Riddick on the top of his
head and walked upstairs. Riddick watched her walk out of the room. He
moaned in frustration.
"Damnit." He mumbled.
After only about an hour, the two were ready to leave. Their few
belongings packed in two shoulder bags, Riddick slung both over his shoulder
and started toward the front of the house.
"Ready?" he asked over his shoulder. Carolyn was a few steps behind, a
solemn look on her face.
"Yeah." She sighed, looking around the house one last time.
"I sure did like it here." She shook her head. Riddick turned around, he
set the bags down and approached her.
Taking her in his arms he whispered,
"I'm sorry about all this, I meant for us to be happy and safe. To start
fresh. I'm sorry, Carolyn."
He squeezed her tight for a brief second, and
then he let go and took a step back. He half-heartedly smiled at her and
touched her cheek lightly. He then kissed her on her forehead and turned
around to leave.
Guarded Trust (Part 10)
On the transport, Riddick and Carolyn kept quiet. There were a few other
passengers aboard, all headed to various transport ships at the docking bay.
Riddick had done a scan on all nearby commercial passenger ships that were
soon to dock on the pleasure planet. One, the Morning Star, had agreed to
take them on board.
The Morning Star was a class G commercial passenger transport ship.
Smaller than the Harbinger had been, but it followed the same guidelines.
Class G ships normally responded to planets where many messages to board had
come through. Riddick and Carolyn had just lucked out on getting it. Once
aboard, Riddick would find out all nearby stops on the list, and he and
Carolyn would choose the safest. The rest would have to be played by ear.
"Docking for ships Night Watcher, Sun Rays, and Morning Star, bay 16-T" an
announcer came over the intercom. Riddick stood up.
"That's us then." He stepped toward the doors, Carolyn following closely.
The doors slid open and a small crowd got off the transport. Once out,
Riddick stopped and looked around. The small transport vehicle sped off to
its next destination. Carolyn pointed off in one direction to a rather
large, gray, ship.
"The Morning Star, that's it over there." She said. Riddick turned, nodded
and walked towards the ship. They soon came to the docking zone. A husky
security man approached them.
"Boarding the Morning Star?" he asked. Riddick nodded and held up the pass
that had been scanned to him when his message got through. The security man
nodded and waved the two past him. They slowly walked up the ship's
entrance ramp.
Inside was chaos. Loading crew hustled by with various objects, passengers
looked around confused as to where to go next. Riddick and Carolyn joined
them in the search for the room assignment post. After a few minutes and a
brief walk down the corridor, they found the post and waited in line until
it was their turn.
"Yes? One room or two?" the computer buzzed out mechanically.
Riddick
cleared his throat,
"One." There was a whirring noise and a few clicks, and then a room key
was thrust out of a slot. Riddick grabbed it and the assignment paper that
followed.
"Level five, room 12-B." he muttered and looked up for a map of the ship.
"Alright, up two levels, come on." He said after scanning the map briefly.
He again slung the bags over his shoulder and walked toward the transport
shaft with Carolyn following. They soon found their room. Riddick slid the
key through and the door opened. The couple stepped inside.v
"Lights." Riddick said softly. They blinked on. The room was smaller than
what they were accustomed to, but neither complained. Carolyn walked around
the quarters to get a feel for things. She found a kitchen and a bathroom
connected to the bedroom.
"Is this alright?" Riddick asked. She nodded in response. He sighed and
set the bags down on the bed.
"Okay then." He paused briefly, "Did you see a monitor or anything in
here?" he looked at Carolyn.
"Uh, yea, it's in the kitchen." She pointed to the door. Riddick nodded
and disappeared into the next room. Carolyn rubbed her forehead and sat
down in a chair.
"Oh boy." she whispered. She slumped down in the chair and tried to relax.
'Why did this have to happen now?' she thought to herself. Now the police
back on the pleasure planet would post descriptions and wanted posters of
Riddick around the near galaxy, and other policemen would be on the lookout
for him, not to mention bounty hunters. They were in for some tough times.
She shook her head and stood up. Walking over to the kitchen, she thought
of what Riddick must have been thinking. He had been so sweet and caring,
and now what? He might want to leave her, for both of their protection. Or
he might just turn hard again, like he had been before.
Once she was in the kitchen, she found Riddick typing something into the
message screen on the wall.
"What are you doing?" she asked hesitantly.
"Finding out where this ship is going, and deciding when we're getting off
it." He responded without looking up. She nodded and walked back out to the
bedroom. She unzipped her bag and began to unpack her few belongings. She
had soon put everything away and was left with nothing to do. She paced the
room up and down for a few minutes, before deciding to try to go to sleep.
She lay down on the bed and rolled over to face the wall.
No sooner had she
done so than Riddick walked into the room and began speaking,
"Alright, I know where our next stop is." Carolyn groaned and sat up.
"And?"
"Venar Heights."
"Why there?"
"I think it's a safe distance from Star Field. We should be alright there.
Do you have a serious objection to it?" Carolyn shook her head,
"When do we get there?"
"Five days." She nodded and lay back down. Riddick sighed and walked over
to the bed. He put his bag on the floor and lay down next to her. He put
on arm around her waist.
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
"You already said that." She whispered back.
"I know." And he kissed her lightly. She closed her eyes, but didn't fall
asleep. Riddick kept his eyes open, but he did take his goggles off. The
two didn't move for a long time, both just lay there, thinking.
The next night, Riddick told Carolyn he needed some time to clear his head.
She agreed with him, saying that while he was gone, she could think as
well.
Riddick now sat in a bar aboard the ship. It was filled with people, music,
talking, and laser lights. It was called "Dark Paradise" and was supposed
to be the best bar on the ship. It was more like a dance club than a bar,
but Riddick didn't complain. He just drank. And thought. He was well
aware of the dangers he and Carolyn now faced. And he regretted that
Carolyn had been pulled into the situation. He should have just left her
alone. Maybe he could make up for it and leave her now, leave her safely.
No, he couldn't.
Even if they both wanted him to, he was sure he could
never leave her. A strange feeling surprisingly interrupted his thoughts.
A feeling of being watched. He shifted his shoulders. He could sense where
it was coming from.the back left corner of the club. He turned in the
direction his senses pointed and came to rest his eyes on a dark shadow of a
man. The man kept his stare locked on Riddick. Riddick looked past him, or
appeared to by turning his head, but his eyes stayed with the man, who got
up and began to work his way across the room to Riddick.
"Hey there." He said as he sat down next to Riddick at the bar. Riddick
nodded and looked down into his glass.
"Nice club, huh?" the man smiled. Riddick snorted and got up to leave.
Outside the club, Riddick hid in the shadows to see if the man was going to
follow him. He didn't come out of the dark, music filled room. Riddick
slowly made his way back to the cabin he shared with Carolyn.
Back inside the club, just inside the door, the stranger waited until
Riddick left to follow him. He knew Riddick couldn't and wouldn't see him
watching him. He was good like that, rumored to be the best at his job.
The man smiled at the thought.
He followed Riddick back to his cabin, wrote down the number of his room in
his mind, and headed back to his own. Once inside, he shed the long coat he
was wearing, revealing a large handgun on his belt. He threw the thing
carelessly on a desk and went into the kitchen.
Carolyn jerked her head up as soon as she heard the door open. The sound
was followed by that of Riddick's heavy footsteps, and she relaxed again.
"You here?" Riddick asked out loud.
"Yeah, in here" she responded. His body soon appeared in the doorway to
the kitchen. He looked at her, sitting there watching a news program.
"They've done an update on your story." She said quietly. Riddick cocked
an eyebrow up.
"And?"
"The hooker was back up there saying she hadn't seen you lately, so they
suspect you've left."
"Great." His mouth formed a thin line.
She got up,
"Do you think they'll find you?" she walked over to him. He hugged her
briefly for comfort.
"I'm not worried about the police, it's bounty hunters that worry me
slightly." He mumbled. She nodded.
"What time is it?"
"Around ten."
"I'm gonna go try to get some sleep." She said, looking at the floor.
"This has really got you upset, doesn't it?" he half-smiled. Carolyn
looked up into his face.
"Yes."
"Oh baby, please don't worry over it so much. I mean, I know why you do,
but I don't like it all the same." He rubbed her shoulders. Her hand went
to his, and their fingers entwined. He led her to the bedroom and laid her
down. She looked up at him, her whole body protected by his. He slid the
goggles off his face and bent down to kiss her. He caressed her body with
his hands, running them up and down her back and arms. She groaned despite
herself. Her fingers latched onto the hem of his shirt, and pulled it over
his head. No sooner was his shirt gone, than the rest of their clothes
ended up on the floor and bed, scattered about.
She lay down and scratched her nails down Riddicks back. His arms slid
under her, and wrapped up around her, from the back. He eased into her,
already fully aroused, and this time she didn't cry out. She bit her lip,
but only half because of the pain. He pushed into her, plunging deep into
her. She sucked air in and held it for a moment, before letting it out
deeply. He grunted as he sunk into her again, and she scratched harder on
his back, leaving marks.
As her enjoyment increased, Riddick's roughness
did as well. He pushed in and out harder and faster. Carolyn was moaning
and breathing heavily, and Riddick was almost to the climax. But he held it
off the best he could, he wanted her to first. To give her some pleasure in
this trying time. He could see it building up in her face, her eyes closed,
mouth open. He plunged in again, her core was almost soaked. She gasped
again, urging him further. He knew she couldn't hold it anymore, he pushed
again, even deeper than before, and Carolyn screamed. He held her body
tightly as she shivered and relaxed slightly. He smiled at her reaction,
yet kept pushing. It was his turn now.
Carolyn got a grip on herself as
she realized he was still going. Now she could pleasure him in return. She
sat up to kiss him. As their tongues lashed at each other's, she pushed him
back until he was lying down. She straddled him, placing his erection back
into her wet, throbbing core. She pushed and moved slightly and urged him
deep again. She rode him as he pushed slightly. His hands slid up her back
and came to massage her hardened breasts. She rocked back and forth,
moaning and panting to arouse him more. He took hold of her hips tightly
and she knew he was coming. He pushed a few more times, harder than before,
until he groaned heavily and relaxed his grip on her.
She sat there a
moment longer, savoring it, and then rolled off to lie beside him.
"Carolyn?" Riddick whispered.
"Hmm?" she replied, smiling.
"I think I am in love with you."
For two days, the two kept to the room, not leaving it hardy ever. Then one
night, Riddick asked if Carolyn wanted to go to the dance club with him.
"What would I wear?" she smiled.
"You look good in anything." He replied. She chose her black leather pants
and a tube top Riddick had bought her.
"Ready?" he asked when she came out of the bathroom. She nodded and he
took her hand and the two left the room.
Once in Dark Paradise, Carolyn and Riddick were inseparable. Riddick
refused to leave her side, for fear that something might happen. They
danced, drank, laughed, and talked. They were on the dance floor yet again
when Riddick saw the stranger he had met in the club before. Again, the man
was watching him. And this time, he was watching Carolyn as well. Riddick
instinctively tensed up, but realized what he was doing and focused on
Carolyn to relax.
They stayed at the club until well after two in the morning. They got back
to their cabin and almost immediately fell asleep beside each other.
When Riddick woke up, Carolyn was gone. He shot up in bed and looked
around. He smelled eggs. Walking into the kitchen, he found her eating
quietly at the counter.
She smiled.
"Morning."
"How did you get up without waking me up too?" he asked, puzzled, but
grinning.
"I guess all those drinks took their toll on you, huh?" she teased.
Riddick smiled and wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her.
"Want something to eat?" she asked when he pulled back. Riddick nodded.
She walked over to the auto-chef and within a minute, bacon and eggs
appeared. Riddick ate them slowly. When he was done, he put the plate
away.
"So, ready to get off the ship?" he asked.
Carolyn shrugged.
"Doesn't matter." She half-smiled.
"Well, I am." Riddick snorted.
Carolyn wrinkled her brow.
"Why?"
"This guy in Dark Paradise keeps actin funny around me, I don't know, he
just gives me a bad feeling."
"The one that bumped into you last night?"
"Yeah, I don't like him much."
"Do you know who he is?"
"Nah, but it doesn't matter."
"Yea.." she trailed off.
Riddick came up to her and hugged her,
"Only one more day though, right?" he said, not specifically to her.
"Yea," she replied, "I'm gonna go clean up or something, I'm getting
restless, alright?" she smiled. Riddick nodded and kissed her lightly
before letting go.
Carolyn walked into the bedroom and began to pick clothes off the floor.
She hummed a tune softly. A shirt here, a shoe here, she picked up
Riddick's pants.
"He's so nervous now." She sighed to herself, "I hope he calms down when we
get on Venar Heights." She looked down to get one of Riddick's shirts and
saw something on the back of it. Puzzled, she looked at it a moment before
picking it up. She stretched the fabric smooth in her hands and looked at
the little metallic chip on the shirts' hem.
"Riddick?" she called out, still looking at the thing. He came up behind
her.
"Yeah?"
"What exactly is this?" she held the shirt so he could get a better look at
it.
She looked over her shoulder to look at his face. It was lined with
thought, and anger.
"Shit."
"What?" Carolyn got worried.
"It's a tap. Some one put a tap on me!" he grabbed the shirt with
hostility. Carolyn jerked back, and took a step back.
"Sorry." He said. She nodded in response.
"Damn." He muttered, "Who the hell put this thing on me? And when?" he
looked up at her.
"You didn't say anything into it? About where we're going or anything, did
you?"
She shook her head,
"No, well, I was talking to myself about it, but I was being really quiet,
I don't think it would have picked it up. But I don't know." She bit her
lip.
"How far away from it were you?" Riddick asked.
Carolyn backed up a few
steps,
"About like this maybe."
Riddick shook his head,
"The tap would have picked your voice up from there. Damn." He clenched
his fist.
Carolyn looked scared.
"I'm sorry! I didn't know it was."
"Shh..it's alright, I'm not mad with you." He cut her off. His fists
clenched with anger and he began to pace the room.
"Well, we gotta get rid of it, now. Before we say anything else stupid
into it. Whoever planted this thing on me had a reason for it, and I doubt
it was anything nice." Carolyn bit her lip uneasily and nodded. Riddick
peeled the chip off his shirt and dropped it on the floor, then stomped on
it. It broke in half. He bent down and picked the pieces up and threw them
out into the hallway. He discarded the shirt on his way back into the
bedroom.
"Well," Carolyn hesitated, "we've only got one more day on the ship, I
mean, what could happen to us in one day?" she was clearly trying to make
the situation seem better.
Riddick shook his head,
"A lot." He sighed. Sinking onto the bed, he groaned.
"Perfect timing."
Carolyn walked over to sit beside him, she scratched his
back lightly to comfort him, or try to anyway.
"You wanna go for a walk?" she asked softly.
Riddick shook his head,
"Whoever planted that thing on me could be waiting for us to leave the room
now. The tap probably had a tracing mechanism on it, so now he knows which
room we're in. We should just stay put. Is that alright?" He looked at
her. She nodded, halfheartedly. Riddick lay back on the bed, Carolyn
followed his lead and rested her head on his chest.
"Do you really think something will happen?" she asked.
"There's unfortunately a good chance of it. I'm so sorry, I never should
have kidnapped you or anything."
Carolyn jerked upright,
"Don't say that, you said you were in love with me, you mean to say you
never should have fallen? For all the bad consequences in the world, for
all the danger and fear, I wouldn't give this life up. I wouldn't even
think about it. My life is more close to perfect than it's ever been now
that I'm with you. I'm glad you decided to take me with you, I couldn't
stand missing out on all this. Riddick, I love you." She bent over and
kissed him. He smiled and rubbed her arm lightly.
"God I love you." He whispered.
Guarded Trust (Part 11)
"Are you ready yet? I wanna get off this ship as soon as possible!"
Riddick called towards the bathroom door.
"Almost!" Carolyn's voice came back. Riddick sighed and stamped his foot
impatiently.
"Well, I'm gonna go ahead and pay for our room, alright?" he walked toward
the door.
"Ok then!" she responded. Riddick walked out and Carolyn heard the door
shut behind him.
"Oh, God I gotta hurry." She mumbled to herself. She came trotting out of
the bathroom carrying a small handbag filled with make up and accessories.
She carelessly shoved the bag into her shoulder bag. Hurrying, she went
back into the bathroom to get more of her things. While in the small room,
she heard the door open again, and footsteps going in the opposite direction
of the bathroom. Figuring it was Riddick, she took no notice.
Back in the
bedroom, she put the things away in her bag. She rubbed her hips and looked
around for something else to pack. She grabbed two pairs of shoes from
under the bed, along with a pair of Riddicks'. She shoved them into the bag
as well and turned around to go check the kitchen over. She stepped into
the doorway and a hand clamped over her mouth and she found herself staring
into the face of a stranger, yet there was something about him that was
familiar. He smiled.
"Hi there girly. Just follow me and don't put up too much of a fight, I do
have a tranquilizer gun." He laughed sarcastically. She nodded as tears
automatically welled up in her eyes. The man led her to the door,
"Now, I can't very well lead you down the hall with my hand over your
mouth, although I will do it if you insist. Promise not to get hysteric if
I remove my hand?" he was still smiling. Carolyn nodded. His hand slowly
lowered. Carolyn was trembling.
"Aw, girly, don't get all shaky, I'm not gonna hurt you now. But you do
need to do one thing for me, leave a note to Riddick. Don't say anything
about who I am, just simply put that you are going somewhere on this planet
with a 'dancing stranger' and that he needs to come get you. Ok?" Carolyn
nodded. He handed her a pen and a piece of paper. She scribbled the note
the best she could with shaking hands. When she was done he read over it
and nodded.
"Good girl." He placed the note on top of her shoulder bag,
"Ready girly?" She shook her head.
"Hmm.too bad." He caught her wrist and pulled her out the door. He quickly
walked her down the halls; they got on to the transport shaft and went up a
few levels. Once off the shaft, they went to what she guessed was his room.
Inside, he sat her down in a chair.
"Now, do you recognize me at all?" Carolyn nodded.
"From where?"
"The club, I remember you bumping into Riddick. I think."
"Yes, that's exactly right girly. Now, what's your name." She looked at
him for a moment, hesitating. He stepped toward her, pulling a gun from his
coat in the process.
"You'll tell me freely, or I can make you. Your choice." He pointed the
gun at her head. The tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Carolyn." She whispered.
"Alright girly. You might have guessed that I'm the one that planted that
tap on your honey." She nodded.
"You also might have guessed that I'm a bounty hunter." He raised his
eyebrows. Carolyn shrugged. He smiled.
"Name's Stark. That's all you need to know, ok? I'm lookin for Riddick,
have been ever since he murdered my co-worker on that pleasure planet.
Explains a lot, don't it?" he smiled even more. Carolyn nodded.
"You know, you're awfully cooperative, and pretty too. Let's hope I don't
have to kill you, huh?" Carolyn shuddered. She wished Riddick would come
bursting through the door. They had come so far to be ruined by some trashy
bounty hunter. He had said he loved her. She needed him so much, she loved
him too. Whether or not she made it out alive, she hoped he did. Riddick
had changed. God if only she could rewind so that Riddick wouldn't leave
her alone.
"Ok girly," the man's voice jogged her back into the situation, "we're
leavin. And we're gonna go back by your man's room to see if we can't get
him to follow us."
"Isn't that exactly what you don't want?" she asked. He smirked.
"Normally, but you see, it's not you I want, I want him for the bounty.
And I gotta lead him right where I want him. See?" he shrugged. Carolyn
wrinkled her brow. This could get ugly.
Stark led her back down on the shaft, to her level. He gripped her wrist
tightly and walked down the corridor at a quick pace. Before they reached
her room, Carolyn saw the door was open. She raised her eyebrows and hope
welled up inside her. The man jerked her past the door and she couldn't get
a good view inside. She strained her ears. There, thud, thud, thud. It
was Riddicks heavy footsteps behind them. She only hoped he had seen them.
She tried to look back, but Stark turned her head back forward.
"No no girly. Keep your eyes forward." They were soon at a docking deck.
Stark almost ran down the ramp. They were on the planet. Carolyn cried
harder. She feared her world was left behind on that ship.
After what seemed forever, they stopped. It had been an eternity since
Carolyn had heard Riddicks' footsteps. She was still crying, and was
getting sore from being so tense and walking so much. She had kept her eyes
shut mostly, and when she opened them, she saw a cheap hotel room. The grip
on her wrist let go, and almost as though it held all her strength, Carolyn
crumpled to the floor. She felt eyes on her, but she didn't care. She
wanted Riddick to come and wrap his big arms around her and tell her it was
all a nightmare.
But no comforting arms came, instead, that horrible voice,
"Alright girly, get yourself together. I know you're tired, but come on."
He sounded irritated. She looked up. Stark was looking out a window.
"See him?" she hesitantly questioned. He turned his gaze towards her and
smiled.
"Not yet girly." Her head sunk, she looked at the floor. Stark turned
back to looking out the window.
The back street where the entrance to the cheap motel was was empty. A few
bums meandered around aimlessly, but no Riddick. Stark sighed. He ran a
hand over his face. 'Tell me this man isn't on that damned ship still.' He
thought. Suddenly, a tall, built frame appeared in the alley. Stark
stiffened and peered through the window, searching for some way of
identification. A flash of metal-a blade. The frame of a man stepped into
a small block of light-Riddick. Stark sighed, relieved. Carolyn looked up
again.
"Showtime, girly." Stark grinned. He stood up, Carolyn's eyes followed
him. She sucked her breath in tight, and prayed. She shut her eyes and let
the air out slowly.
"Please." She whispered.
"Alright girly, I'm goin out and getting Riddick's attention, and I'm
lockin you in here. I'll be back." And Stark was gone. Carolyn's eyes
watered up as she continued to pray. Suddenly, she was out of the chair and
on the floor, on her knees.
"Please, I know my life hasn't been perfect, or anywhere near it, but I
need Your help, You are the only one who can hear me now. Please." her
voice cracked as she cried. She wiped the tears away carelessly and
continued to mouth her prayer, but didn't say any more. She heard a door
open somewhere a little ways off, but didn't open her eyes. She kept
praying. Footsteps.but she kept praying. Another set of them, but she kept
praying. She prayed for herself and for Riddick, for those lost on that
planet so long ago, and for those on the Harbinger. She prayed for those
who had lost their lives on the rebellious planet, especially the docking
pilot whose death had brought her into Riddick's life, and him into hers.
Suddenly, a gunshot and a groan. Her eyes shot open.
Tears streamed down
her cheeks and dripped onto her shirt. But Carolyn was frozen, time stood
still. The doorknob turned, her breath caught in her chest. The door
opened and she hoped with all her might it would be Riddick.
"Sorry girly." Stark smiled. He knew what she had been hoping. Carolyn
let out a sob and collapsed. Stark walked over to her.
"Now, now girly. He's not dead," he said bluntly. Carolyn looked up,
curious. "Nah, I had to shoot him. He was getting too close for comfort.
But he's still comin. And that means we gotta leave and get outta this
place. C'mon girly." He took hold of her arm, "We'll go out the window
into the alley." He muttered. Carolyn limply followed him, numb to his
touch, but not to her feelings. Riddick was alive. She had to hold on.
Stark drug her out of the apartment into the black alley. They quickly
walked down it a little ways, and then Stark yanked Carolyn into an
abandoned warehouse. Once inside, he pinned her against the wall.
"Shhh." he whispered. She was still crying. It was too much for her, the
whole situation. She somehow had to let Riddick know where they were. She
sniffed loudly. Stark glared at her, but said nothing.
For a moment,
silence. Deafening silence. Then, when Carolyn had all but lost hope, a
thud on the door. And another. The thuds got louder and it became apparent
that some one was trying to bust through.
"Shit." Stark hissed. He grabbed Carolyn's arm again and thrust her toward
the back of the room. He pulled a gun and pointed it toward her. Her eyes
grew and fresh tears welled in them.
"The man must love you." He shook his head. Carolyn nodded. Another thud,
and the door bent. Yet another followed within a second. Stark returned
his attention back to Carolyn.
"And you must love him a whole lot too." He smiled. Carolyn nodded again.
Stark grinned menacingly.
"Would you die for him?" Carolyn turned pale. She backed up a few steps.
Stark moved forward, keeping distance with her.
"Would you die for him!" it sounded more like a statement than a question.
Carolyn stiffened bravely.
"Yes!!" she yelled back. Stark smiled even more.
"Alright girly." He stepped forward again, cocked the gun and pulled the
trigger.
A second later, the door broke and Riddick stumbled in. Stark turned to
face him, but didn't point the gun. Riddick looked at him, and then at the
limp body on the floor. Forgetting the man, he ran over. Carolyn's chest
was stained red. A small pool of blood formed underneath her. Riddick's
eyes softened. Tears formed where they never had before.
"No." he whispered. He touched Carolyn's cheek, still warm. His face
showed his pain and anguish. The tears came freely, he couldn't stop them.
He didn't have the strength. He brushed her hair back. Her pale eyes grew
cloudy before his.
"Carolyn," he choked, his shoulders shuddered with his tears. Stark
stepped up and kicked Riddick in the ribs. The once sturdy and hard man
rolled across the floor, hitting the wall. He was like a rag doll. Stark
followed his body, he squatted down and grinned in Riddick's face.
"Oh, by the way Riddick, she said it was for you."
