The Yellow Rose

There it was the beauty of the day
A single yellow rose I brought to say
"I Love You"

I handed it to you with a gentle hug and kiss
A symbol of my loving heart euphoriated bliss
Unique one of a kind the beauty it embraced
The words "I Love You" written upon the plastic case
This symbol of love I gave to you

Then like a dagger to my breast I saw you place it alone still encased
Upon the shelf away from light in that small and dismal space
This symbol of love I gave to you

Perhaps later...you would open it...vase it...this symbol of love sublime
Freeing it to live and grow to open beautifully in it's time
This symbol of love I gave to you

Yet days went by I never saw the beauty of the yellow rose
It sat encased alone in that small and dismal space and decomposed
This symbol of love I gave to you

You never opened it or shared it's beauty this sickened quick my heart
Smothered, starved, untouched by you right from the very start
This symbol of love I gave to you

As I veiwed what remained this browned, withered, unopened part of me
A sinking feeling came, like a death, of someone dear as dear can be
This symbol of love I gave to you

Like the yellow rose unopened, unnourished and encased
My love for you was shelved, alone, in that small and dismal place
Withered, browned, smothered
and lost without a trace
This love I gave to you!
