Directions for making your own Fuzzi Bunz inspired diaper. This is for your own personal use only, not to be sold. The  Fuzzi Bunz name and design are registered trademarks. This pattern is not the same as a Fuzzi Bunz, it is my own pattern that is modified to be a pocket diaper, like a Fuzzi Bunz These directions are for a side snap and a front aplix version.
I like the idea of the Fuzzi Bunz diaper, but could never get a good fit on my son with front snaps. So I created a side snap version that you see here that fits wonderfully! I use a hemp fleece prefold (just one) inside at night and we have yet to have a leak!
Here I will take you step by step through the process. If you find any of my directions or pictures confusing, please let me know! harrismona@hotmail.com
STEP ONE: GETTING STARTED

I recommend using high quality materials. My personal favorite for the outside is a 1 or 2 mil PUL. You can buy it here:

www.diaperfabric.com

For the inside, micro fleece is best. Malden Mills makes the best quality fleece available and is an excellent company. Tonitex also makes a nice low cost micro fleece. Joanns now offers a low pill micro fleece. Ive not tried it, but plan to one day.

Next you will need snaps or Aplix. You can get these from

www.diaperfabric.com
You will need a piece of outer material and inner material at least 20x20 to make the large. Cut a template from paper first. You may need to practice a few times to get it to look like the picute above. Please remember the extra one inch of fabric that looks like a tab at the top. You will need this later to form your elastic casing
STEP 2: YOUR CLOSURES  If you are using snaps, you may want to add a stablizing layer to the wings. This can be either a piece of fleece or a piece of PUL. All this does is make the wings a bit thicker so the snaps wont pull through. Metal snaps are not recommended for PUL. The fabric is too delicate for them. Metal snaps will work fine for a fleece outer.
If using Aplix, cut a strip of loop side (soft) about 8 inches long for the size large. zig zag it all the way around.
STEP 3: BACK ELASTIC remember that one inch tab of fabric? Now you will need to make your casing.Take a piece of elastic and hold it down where you see the green line.  Fold the fabric tab down over to the wrong side of the fabric. Now stitch with a straight stitch through the outer, casing and elastic. Now stictch along the bottom of the casing carefully as not to stitch over the elastic. This is represented by the orange line. Once you reach the other end, pill the elastic inside nice and tight so that it gathers the back up. Oncee you get it to the desired tightness, stitch that end closed, stiching through the PUL and the elastic. This is represented by the pink line. Do this for both the fleece layer and the PUL layer.
STEP 4: putting them together Now we need to put the layers together. Lay them right sides together and serge or stitch around the edge begining at the place where your back elastic starts. Continue all the way around until you get to the place where your back elastic ends. This will leave you with a 3-4 inch hole in the back. You may want to re-enforce that edge just a bit.
STEP 5: the rest of the elastic  Now you will install the leg and back elastic. If you are doing a side snap style, you will also add elastic to the front. If you are doing aplix, ,you can skip the front elastic.Attach the elastic just to the spots shown in the diagram. Attach it by stitching on the outside of your sewing line. just tack it down securely with a shortt zig zag or strait stitch. You will need about 7 inches of elastic for each leg and about 4 for the front. The newest style of fuzzi Bunz has no leg casing, this works really well to eliminate wicking through the thread. If you want to make your diaper with no casings, simply zig zag the stretched elastic to the leg following the the edge of the 2 layers very closely. This causes the fleece inside to roll out a bit and gives a very soft finish to the leg openings.
