| GAI Selva Zoo-Without-Walls Project The GAI Selva reserve is a 75-acre protected peninsula, bordered by the Amazon River and its tributaries. It is the largest expanse of virgin rainforest in the area and the perfect location for a much-needed animal rescue and restoration project. (Map of the Reserve) GAI and the Ecological Police conduct raids on local animal markets, confiscating all protected species and bringing them to the reserve. In addition, GAI receives injured and displaced animals from local unviersities, NGOs, and residents. Animal care is provided by local veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine, for whom lodging and use of GAI facilities is free. Animals that can be restored to the wild are relocated to larger near-by reserves. Many will stay at GAI Selva, roaming free in the rainforest and around the jungle lodges. The Zoo-Without-Walls also houses a model organic garden, which feeds the GAI community and its resident herbivores, and a medicinal plant complex. Local residents are taught organic and medicinal plant farming as a sustainable industry. The zoo and gardens provide employment for local villagers, while teaching them to protect and sustainably develop wildlife and natural resources. What your donation will do: Feed and protect 300 animals every year! Protect at least two species per year from extinction! Build lodging for volunteer students and scientists who will train local villagers and, once home, become ambassadors for sustainability in the Amazon. 50 families per year will learn the value of their wildlife and environment as a sustainable industry base. GAI Selva Culture Center Project The Culture Center is the heartbeat of GAI. It provides meeting space, classrooms, computer access, and communal kitchen for the complex and its neighbors. At the Culture Center, student interns provide free daily English instruction to 56 families. This will open opportunities for many in eco-tourism and other employment areas. The Center hosts programs and workshops that provide it with student interns to work in the reserve and with the community. As future leaders in business, science, and government they will act as ambassadors of sustainable development. The computer laboratory in Iquitos utilizes student interns to teach computer literacy to local villagers and to assist them in creating village webpages, through which they bring their sustainable development projects to the world. What your donation will do: Support a computer laboratory that serves the region around GAI and provides facilities for visiting project developers and volunteer workers. Bring the GAI Selva Project into classrooms around the world online. Bring community self-help projects into homes and classrooms around the world online. Train and employ 4 villagers per year, two males and two females, at the Culture Center. 100 local people per year(adults and children) will learn English! 100 local people per year(adults and children) will become computer literate! GAI Selva CAMU-CAMU Project Camu-Camu is a tree indigenous to the Amazon. Once abundant, it has fallen victim to deforestation. It's fruit was recently identified as an exceptional source of Vitamin C, which has produced a growing demand for Camu-Camu that far outstrips supply. GAI can plant ten hectares (25 acres) of Camu-Camu for under $1,000 U.S. At five years, 10 hectares produces over one ton of Camu-Camu. At seven years, it produces 100 tons; and, at 15 years, it produces 200-250 tons of Camu-Camu. Each 10 hectare plot can produce annual incomes of $60,000. In addition, other subsistence and cash crops can be grown in the reforested areas. GAI Selva is seeking funding to create a local cooperative for processing Camu-Camu. GAI will provide processing facilities and product manufacturing services on its 75-acre reserve. 20% of all cooperative earnings will go to creating a fund to support other sustainable development projects in the rainforest. This will provide the region with a sustainable, diversified economy and establish it as a model for sustainable development in the Amazon. The Camu-Camu trees will provide a restored habitat for numerous endangered species of birds and animals. What your donation will do: Produce $600,000 of sustainable local income for each 100 hectares of camu-camu. Reforest over 2,000 acres of Peruvian Amazon. Provide work and adequate income for 1,000 impoverished families. Restore a safe, natural habitat for endangered species. Create a replicable model of sustainable development for other regions of the Amazon. |
