Once upon a time, there was Mr. Cards and Ms. Domino. They spent a lot of time at Edison High School until something horrible happened. They were kicked out of school. This was done because they were participating in "illegal activities." They were the supposed ring leaders in a chain of illegal events that occurred at Edison. Let's get straight to the point. Students at Edison are not allowed to play cards or dominoes in school. Why? Some students were caught gambling in school. As a result, all students were forced to end games like cards and dominoes in school. Are students being violated?
Many students at Edison enjoy playing cards and dominoes. It is not unusual for students to like playing games. Afterall, they are games. The point of a game is to play it or to provide entertainment. After a long day of work, students like to relax during their lunch period by playing a game. It is a part of socializing. How can we relax if we are restricted from playing simple games.
One reason given is that cards and dominoes promotes gambling among students. Lets consider this reason now. Gambling is not limited to just cards and dominoes. We can gamble on what's for lunch, which tecahers are absent, or even on the next person who walks through the door. Students can even gamble on chess. Chess is allowed in Edison, so why not cards and dominoes. Face it, we can gamble on practically anything. If you fail to believe this, try reading Mark Twain's short story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.
Mr. Roberts, a dean at Edison, agrees that students can gamble with anything, but it is not restricted until someone is caught. According to Mr. Roberts, students got out of hand with gambling. It was not only about the money but, many students kept a tab on the people who owed them. The situation got out of control because when the gamblers confronted each other, it was about the money owed. This could lead to further conflict.
However, just because a few students gambled, does not mean that everyone else does. A lot of students like playing games. It's unfair to punish the entire student body for the actions of a few. So what does this really mean? It may mean that eventually all games will be banned at Edison. As more students are caught gambling, more games will be taken away. They allow students to play Uno. Lets see how long that will last. Students also play with Pokemon and Magic cards. It is possible that there are students gambling with these cards also. Does this mean that every game we play will sooner or later be banned in Edison?
We propose that the deans give students another chance. Unlike some students, the majority of us do not play to gamble, but to have fun. We should be allowed to play dominoes or cards during our lunch period. Teachers or deans are welcomed to watch over us because there is nothing to hide. Those who are caught gambling deserve fair punishment. However, the rest of us are just participating in innocent fun.
