Hwa-Tu
Hwa-Tu (Hato) is a game played with small plastic cards representing the months of the year. The cards with higher point values have Chinese characters on them. The following table shows several of the cards in a Hwa-Tu deck. All the suits can be viewed at this site
Card Suit | Description | Card Suit | Description
Sol (Pine Tree) | Kwang (bright) card | Pung (Leaves) | Animal card
Mae-Jo (A type of flower) | Animal card | Be (Rain) | Kwang (bright) card from this suit
Nan-Cho (Another flower found in Korea) | The animal card from this suit | Mae-Jo | Hong-Dan (Orange banner)
Mok-Dan (Yet another Korean flower) | Chong-Dan(Blue banner) | Be (Rain) | Junk (Pi) card |
Play begins with the dealer dealing four cards to the other players, turning four up, dealing another four, placing four more up and then placing one card up in the discard pile.
Players try to match suits that are on the table with cards in their hand. The player first plays a card out of his/her hand. If a match is made, the player them draws a card from the pile and leaves it on the table.
If the player had a match and turns another card of the suit that he/she matched, the cards are left on the table until a player plays the fourth card from the suit.
The score is based on the point value of the cards each player holds at the end of the hand. The more combinations you have, the higher your score. Check out the special combinations here
