Yut

Yut is a game played with four sticks each with a curved side and a flat side, a board with a square or circle and intersecting lines, and four game pieces for each player or team. Anywhere from 2 to 8 players in teams of four can play. Both teams place their mals (horses) on the same spot. All four sticks are tossed up and the position they land in determines the number of positions that the player moves. Moves are made counterclockwise based on the combination of flat or curved sides of the sticks facing up. The combinations are:

yut sticks
Yut sticks
  1. One flat side up is called do (pig)
    • move 1 space
  2. Two flat sides up is called kye (dog)
    • move 2 spaces
  3. Three flat sides up is called kol (sheep)
    • move 3 spaces
  4. Four flat sides up is called yut (ox)
    • move 4 spaces
  5. No flat sides up is called moe (horse)
    • move 5 spaces

Tossing a yut or mo will get you another turn. Also, if you throw the number of spaces you need to land on the other player's mal (pouncing), you get another turn. Play continues until one player or team move all their pieces past home. This game is also played for money, normally small denomination coins such as 100 and 500 won coins (equivalent to 10 cents and 50 cents) coins. Yut boardYut Board
