Rear Axle Swap and Lift

There is now a rear 3/4 ton Suburban axle under the Blazer. The first order of business was to freshen it up with new bearings, seals, fluid, etc. The gears were in great shape, so they were left alone. This part of the build-up went pretty smooth, except I didn't get the bigger leaf plates from the donor truck and finding another pair, besides from the dealer, is a chore.

When I broke open the rear drums, I discovered someone took it upon themselves to generously apply grease to all components inside (no doubt to prevent rust, .....and stopping distance!). This was just one more excuse to swap to disc brakes instead of going through the hassle of cleaning these off. :-)

Old 10 bolt ready to be removed.....

Old axle looks cute compared to the 14 bolt.

I like!!

Beefy axle looks right at home under the Blazer. Four inch tapered blocks in place.

Update: F@rd rear leaf springs with shackle flip coming soon....

Tips:
Get the u-bolt plates from the donor truck.
Cut the old u-bolts off.
The hybrid u-joint I needed for my '83 was Napa PN 447.
