Kersten Jade came into this world on October 19,2000 at 12:48 a.m. She was screaming her head off. And as soon as the Dr. got Kersten's umbilical cord cut she peed all over him. I had to laugh about that, I told the Dr. that she is saying piss on you...LOL. Here is what happened to Kersten. I went in for my 38th week ob check up, and the midwife was listening to the baby's heart beat when it went all wacky. It sounded like there was two heart beats at once. The midwife went all around my stomach to make she was't picking up my heart beat with it. She couldn't find another heart beat at all. So she went back to the place where she heard the first heart beat and it was still sounding real fast and double. Thats when she seen the look on my face and asked me if I had ever heard that before. I shook my head no, and thats when she sent me down to labor and delivery. I got to labor and delivery and they hooked me up to the heart monitors and they heard the heartrate was abnormal. The nurse called the Dr. in and the Dr. yelled to get the sonogram machine stat. Once the sonogram machine was in there they looked at the baby and seen that their was hardly any fluid around her and that her heart beat was to high and that it was stopping. The Dr. yelled for the nurse to induce me stat, that was at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. I did not get induced till around 7 that night. And did not deliver Kersten till 12:48 a.m. After Kersten was born the nurses kept slapping her and would not stop.. My husband finally made the comment that she had hit Kersten enough. The nurse then told him that Kersten was not the color that she wanted her to be. After about 10 minutes they handed Kersten to me and let me hold her for a few seconds then they took off with her. After about an hour they came in and told me that they had to put Kersten in NICU that there was something wrong with her. Her oxygen sats were down to 20 when they should have been in the high 90's or 100. Kersten was placed under an oxygen tent where she stayed till she was transported to Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio Texas from Darnall Army Community Hospital. They gave me all kinds of names that they think Kersten had wrong with her that all dealt with her heart. It wasn't until we were at Wilford Hall that we were told the true diagnoses. Kersten was diagnosed with Pulmonary Atresia with about 5 other heart problems. The Dr.s did not know the chance of survival for her, because they had never seen such a thing. Kersten was then transported to University of Texas hospital there in San Antonio where she underwent open heart surgery at four days old. The morning Kersten went into surgery was the hardest time to bare. Not knowing what was going on or what was happening. After about 4 hours the Dr. came out to talk to us and told us that Kersten was doing great that she went thru the surgery just fine. While he was talking to us and explaining to us what he had done, he was paged back into the OR one of the patients had gone down. At that moment I knew it was Kersten, my world just dropped then. There was a preacher there with us, and he came over to me and prayed with me. A few minutes later the Dr. came out and told us that Kersten had went down while they were sewing her up and that they were able to revive her. God gave me a miracle right then. |
