BRIEF HISTORY OF DISTRICT 411

Lionism in East Africa had a humble beginning. It was first introduced
in East Africa by the formation of the Lions Club in Nairobi (Host) on
29th August 1958. This paved the way for the formation of 41 such
clubs in all the major towns of Kenya. It spread to Uganda with the
formation of the first club in Kampala on 11th October 1959.
Tanzania witnessed the birth of Lions Club at Dar-es-salaam on
13th January 1962. Ethiopia joined Lionism in 1966 with the formation
of a club at Addis Ababa on the 11th of May. Lionism flourished in all
parts of Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and together
they came to be known as District 411.
