1947, early February | A blizzard raged for 10 days in southern Saskatchewan. Huge snowdrifts (up to 8 meters deep) created havoc everywhere. A dairy farmer in Moose Jaw had to cut a hole in his barn roof so that he could enter it to milk his cows. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1974, April 17 | The Moose Jaw River and two creeks, which join in the city of Moose Jaw, overflowed their banks and cut the city in half. The rising waters deluged about 60 city blocks and 480 homes. Rescuers evacuated 1400 people. 1984, October 17 | A snowstorm traversed Saskatchewan from west to east. Snowfall combined with 50 to 80km/hour winds to reduce visibility to near zero, creating numerous driving accidents. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1989, May 28 | A 40cm fall of wet snow stranded several teenagers on a school field trip in Cypress Hills Provincial Park. All were rescued after a 24-hour ordeal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1989, June 19 | Eight tornadoes were reported across central Saskatchewan. Winds gusting to 130km/hour uprooted trees, tore off shingles, blew over granaries and sheds, and caused power failures. The worst damage occurred near Blaine Lake, northwest of Saskatoon, when hail shredded crops soon after the tornado. Winds lifted a 23 meter mobile home enroute from Estevan to Edmonton and dumped it in a ditch. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1990, December 20 | Half of the reporting weather stations in Saskatchewan recorded a minimum temperature of -40 degrees Celcius or lower. Just before Christmas, cold weather shattered several temperature records when the mercury fell to -47 degrees Celcius at Meadow Lake. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1995, August 26 | Fierce thunderstorms packing 100km/hour winds ripped through southern Saskatchewan, flattening farm buildings and leaving knee-high drifts of hail. Pilot Butte bore the brunt of the storm. Winds damaged every property (440 homes) in town and stripped all trees bare. A nearby cement plant was flattened. 1996, February 1 | A record high windchill of 2783 was recorded at 10:55am at Broadview, about 143 km east of Regina. At that time, there was a northwest wind blowing at 44km/hour with an air temperature of -39.3 degrees Celcius. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1997, December | The mean December temperature for Regina and Saskatoon was at -5.1 and -5.7 degrees Celcius respectively, the warmest on record. Many other stations in southern Saskatchewan also experienced the warmest December temperatures. |
