People in Saskatchewan spend almost as much time discussing the weather as they do politics. The reason - well maybe it is because our agriculture-based economy relies so much on the weather.
Many people are under the impression that Saskatchewan is a cold and snowy place. We have winter, yes we will not deny that but our weather is much more interesting than people expect. We experience extremes of climate with temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Celcius to +40 degrees Celcius, moisture conditions from drought to torrential downpours, and severe storms from winter blizzards to summer tornadoes.
Here are just a few examples of what we experience in Saskatchewan. Yellow Grass and Midale in southeast Saskatchewan hold the Canadian record for the hottest temperature recorded at 45 degrees Celcius in 1937. Estevan, also in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, is the sunshine capital of Canada, averaging over 2500 hours of sunlight a year. Estevan holds the Canadian record for the highest number of hours of sunshine at 2701 in 1980. Saskatchewan is right in the middle of one of Canada's two tornado alleys. While we do not experience tornadoes like those in the United States deadly tornadoes can strike Saskatchewan. The 1912 tornado which struck Regina is the deadliest in Canadian history, killing 28 people and injuring hundreds.
