Henry's Farm by Thea |
The year was 1952 when I first arrived in Canada. The month was februari, and the province was Saskatchewan. We had been told about the beautiful farms on the prairy and of course it was my dad's dream to become a rich farmer . Riding a tractor and milking the cows. Before we left Holland he had to learn how to milk the cows, it belonged with the farming . Little did he know about the prairy farming, it was mostly weath and there where the odd mixed farmer like Henry's farm. Well we got all very curious about Henry's farm ,we went to visit Henry to see what a mixed farm looked like well I could see the disappointment on my dad's face. He expected to see barns like the once above. What we did find was a barn build with hard working hands and a lot of love for the annimals. Henry's barn was a piece of smart thinking and I thought a piece of art. It was put together with Mud and a lot of sods and whatever else Henry could find on his land. It the barn looked almost like a whole in the ground . I walked inside and oh it was nice and warm. The cows , the horses , the chickens, and even the deer had found a nice warm home in Henry's barn I even saw some birds happely picking away on the seeds that Henry had thrown for them . Henry showed us his home that had two bedrooms and a kitchen . There was no electric stove just a wood burner. There where no washing machine or dryer but he had a tub with a scrub board. No TV just cards on the table and some other games. He told John the extra bed room was his if he wanted to stay and work the farm with him. John liked the pionier style Henry lived, and took him up on his offer. John moved in with Henry and had ample time to practish his guitar at night and the two of them had a good time Henry even learned to sing to Johny's tune and made up his own words . It went some what like Dingle dongle, Dongle dingle, John and I are happy farmers singing our own Dingle dongle songs. Dad had seen enough and went to work for a weath farmer. John stayed with Henry where he was very happy. |
