Child of world war 2 by Thea Van doorn. From a distance I watch her this ,skinny child. She had been pacing back and forth in front of this large mansion. She looked like there was something on her mind, something she would rather not do. I watched her as she leaned against the wall , then made a few moves towards the marble steps and returned again to where she had been leaning against the wall . She was shivering from the cold. I thought perhaps she was looking for some warmth. The rain was coming down hard right now. She looked so hungry, my heart and soul wanted to go to her and hold her in my arms to,stop her shivering. I heard the wistling bomb she should not be there all allone I thought, as I ducked deeper into my shelther, the memory is so very strong. The little girl about seven, looked down on her torn and tattered dress, it was the only dress she had left to wear. Her apron was that of her mam, it was pretty but to big for her. Then suddenly she turned towards the granite steps as she straightened out the apron, she started to climb towards the heavy door. She inspected her dress again put the apron back over the holes . Her tiny hands reached for the big door knokker ,she barely could reach it and she let it go to make a loud noise. After a few minutes ,a woman dressed for tea opened the door .The lady I reconized as the person in charge of the parcels, send from over seas ,mostly America, the parcels where to be divided among the poor. She looked around and then looked down at the child and I heard her say "What do you want child ? this is my tea time," she was annoyed. The little girls hands trembled, she swallowed hard, before her speech did start, then I softly heard the child say, "Dear lady I heard that your in charge of the parcels that come from over seas and you see, I need a new dress to wear. My mom and daddy are too poor and they can't help that, it is the war you know. Please don't close the door, just one dress and I want be back no more". "Wait here child I'll see what I can do". She sounded angry .The heavy door had opened wide and from where I was hiding I could see the marble hall in all it glory. I saw the childs face light up and a big smile appeared on her little face . It was easy to guess that she had visions running through her little head of a pretty new treasure. Her heart filled with happiness as she got ready to slip on the new dress. As the lady returned, her mama's voice was in her thoughts and she could hear her say, "mind your manners ,show No lack". She started to take the old worn out dress of as she was certain she soon would have a new one to wear and she did not want to take up the ladies time away from her tea. Then like a thunder storm, she heard........ " What are you doing dirty child? have you gone absolutely wild? I have no dress for you to wear. This coat will do, it is torn but it can still be worn. Out the door you sickly child, the coat, will keep out the cold ," the lady smiled as she shoved the child out the door. The biggest tears I ever saw rolled down the little girls face,as the heavy door closed with a bang. On the granite steps stood the shivering child, she took her mamma's apron and wiped her eyes then I heard her wisper. "Thank you lady for the coat, it is torn and way to small , but it will keep out the cold. But lady there is one thing I would like you to know, I am not DIRTY, I am Just POOR". My heart broke into pieces as I had felt the childs dream of the new dress and the hurt that came to her by the lady in charge, who called her dirty. The little one ran to her home and her mama's arms and wispered once more , I AM NOT DIRTY, I AM JUST POOR. |
