The light produced by fireflies is a chemical reaction called bioluminescence. Some species of firefly cannot light up at all, with other species either males or females or both can. Different species also have different lighting patterns. Fireflies use their ability to light up to attract mates and as a warning signal to let predators know that they taste bad. Even though they taste bad, fireflies do have predators that include frogs, spiders, and some birds.

The picture of the firefly has been edited, I don't think there are any pink fireflies in real life. ^_^
