1947 was the fifth year of the league and the first year the pitchers were allowed to pitch sidearm. Previously they had pitched underhand.

The league drew close to one million fans in 1947. Max Carey was the league president. Philip K. Wrigley, the league founder, never actually attended any of the games. He thought that if he attended a game, he would mentally compare the women to his MLB players and would be disappointed.

To start the season, the league kicked off their spring training in Havana, Cuba. For two weeks they trained and played exhibition matches in front of about 200,000 Cuban fans.

Leaving Cuba, the Women's teams toured the US in pairs and played exhibition matches in over 35 different cities.

The real season commenced on May 21st. They played a 112 game schedule composed of all night games except for Sundays. On Sunday they usually played after Church services. Mondays were their day off.

The Muskegan Lassies won the Pennant while Grand Rapids won the Shaughnessy style playoffs. Racine beat Muskegan three games to one in the first round as Grand Rapids beat South Bend in five games. In the finals, the first three games went into extra innings. The Chicks finally won the series in the seventh game with a 1-0 win.
