This is GALERA small and ancient; rich in natural, historic, cultural and human heritage that deeply impresses the visitor. Carved out of the rocks, they are a magnificent example of man's integration with the landscape and nature. In the Altiplano (High Plateau) they have always been a common dwelling and now after being reformed, are available to the rural tourist. In the CAVE HOUSES OF GALERA , lovers of this variety of tourism will find a type of accommodation which, apart from being a novelty and attraction, is ideal for getting to know the natural and cultural values offered by this land and its people, in the hope that the visitor will be completely satisfied
In our wine-cellar/restaurant "Meson Bodega LA ZALONA", you can enjoy the authentic cooking of the area, "Lata al Horno", "Andrajos" and a large ecetera., accompanied by "Vino del Pais", elaborated in the restaurants own wine cellar which you can visit, served with "crespillos".

Among the dishes you can enjoy there, are special home-made roast meat (lata al horno), small pies filled with marrow jam, river crabs, and others peculiar to "La Zalona".
Galera is a village where the main activity is agriculture, crop farming and sheep farming being the most important.

This rich and varied agriculture has its influence in the local meal, wine and sweets, which are as exquisite as typical of the area. The vineyards produce the grapes for the typical and famous wine "Vino del Pais" of Galera which is not exploited on an industrial level owing to its home-made, family character. The harvesters are small farmers who look after their vineyards with dedication to obtain a healthy produce. They hardly use any mechanical means and the produce is consumed in typical "bodegas" and taverns. If you want to know how we produce our "Vino del Pais" or participate in the treading come to see us in October and we will show you.

"A landscape of extrordinary and breathtaking beauty, of hard and dried-out land, broken up by the grooves made by the rivers, of dug out caves full of life. A land to discover, whose origins disappear in the dawn of humanity, where remnants of old civilizations are plentiful and make this region an authentic open-air museum."
Galera Area Information
The natural wealth of its surroundings - Galera is geographically located in the middle of the Natural Parks of Cazorla, Castril , Maria Los Velez, and Baza - allows us to take part in all kinds of open-air activities as well as excursions to the neighbouring villages (stroll through their streets and visit their monuments), valleys, forests, fountains (the quality and healing properties of their water have been known since ancient times), and archaeological sites revealing the first human presence in Europe and representing practically all cultures (historic as well as prehistoric) of Mediterranean origin
The abundance and importance of these remains allow us to study in an area of no more than 4km (the distance which separates the "Cerro del Real" of Galera and the "Cerro de Cabeza" of Orce) the evolution of some 4,500 years of our history.

The composition of the soil which forms these "barren" hills enables the local people to dig out caves, thus developing a type of housing which is comfortable and adapted to the characteristics of the zone, where the majority of Galera's population dwells allowing this housing tradition to live on. A culture of traditions and beliefs, of arts and celebrations, where the principal roles are played by the people of Galera; people who are friendly and helpful, who want to share what they have with others, as generous as the land where they were born
