2009 is the sesquicentennial of the original Goldsboro Rifles. Stacy Jones has compiled a lot of information about the Goldsboro Rifles and is in the process of publishing a book about them from their inception in 1859 through their being absorbed into the North Carolina National Guard. Stacy Jones, Johnna and Chris at the Wayne County Museum and the Goldsboro Rifles, Camp 760 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and have put together an exhibit in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of this group of local citizens who served as local militia, Confederate soldiers, United States soldiers and North Carolina National Guard soldiers.
Please stop by and learn about them at the Wayne County Museum on the corner of South William and East Mulberry Streets in Goldsboro.
The last meeting of the Goldsboro Rifles was held Thursday October 1, 2009 at the home of Dan Boyette. The program was a History Channel video which was shown in 1998 on the history of slavery. It was very interesting. It showed Africans presenting the history as they know it. The trade was supported by tribe chieftans capturing other tribes and sometimes marching them for a year to reach the Ivory and Gold Coasts where they were sold to slave traders. These chieftans became very wealthy doing so. It must have been produced before the advent of political correctness. The History Channel representatives say that it is no longer available. Surprise, surprise!
There were 13 members and guests in attendance.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Goldsboro Rifles will be held at 7:00pm, November 5, 2009. The meeting will be held at the Seven Springs Restaurant. Program TBA. Membership in the Goldsboro Rifles is open to males at least 12 years old and of good character who has an ancestor that served in the Confederate armed forces or was a political figure serving the Confederacy.
If you might be interested in visiting our meeting, you are most welcome to do so. We would like to have you. Who knows, you might want to join up. If you need help searching for a qualifying ancestor, we can help you with that. We are not a re-enactment group so there is nothing you have to buy but your membership dues.
