| Lions Clubs: “We Serve” Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity! Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity is entering into an exciting partnership with area Lions Clubs! Clubs throughout the 5M-1 district, which covers an eight-county region, including Goodhue, Wabasha, Dodge, Olmsted, Winona, Mower, Fillmore and Houston counties, are contributing labor and financial resources towards the construction of the Habitat home for James and Deborah Ruby. Partnering with the visually-challenged Ruby family is a natural fit with the Lions Club mission: “we serve.” Lions Clubs throughout the world, including the 49 clubs in the 5M1 district, “are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired,” notes the Lions Clubs International website: www.lionsclubs.org. Their dedication to the blind and visually impaired began in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the international convention of the Lions Clubs to take action. “Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness,” Keller asked, “no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided?” Lions Clubs International has responded to that challenge, recycling over 5 million pairs of eyeglasses annually, providing vision screenings, establishing eye banks and vision research centers, and supplying the visually impaired with guide dogs, white canes, and other resources. This is not the first partnership between the Ruby family and the Red Wing Lions Club; they worked together in the late 1990’s to obtain a Reading Edge machine for the Red Wing Public Library. The Reading Edge machine scans pages from books and other printed documents and reads them aloud. Jim and Debbie “continue to really support other people in the community with visual challenges,” Red Wing Public Library Director Sally Setzer noted. “They are very active in the community.” Look for Lions Clubs on the jobsite at 1104 Central Avenue this summer! Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity thanks the Ruby family and District 5M1 Lions Clubs for their partnership and support! |
