History

Martin Crane was born in 1932 in Seattle. His father was a cop and this was a profession Martin would also enter. In 1950 Martin was drafted by the army and served a tour of duty in Korea under the command of Lt Franks, where he fell asleep in a foxhole once and woke up not knowing a cease-fire had ended. In 1952 Martin and his friend Duke went to San Francisco before returning to Seattle, where in the same year Martin met and fell in love with Dr Hester Palmer over the outline of a murder victim. They were married within 6 months and not long after that their first child, Frasier, was born. A second child, Niles, followed in 1957.

The Cranes were happily married until 1966 when Hester had an affair with Martin's friend Stan Lawler. Martin and Hester separated, and he flirted with a girl at the morgue, but he soon got back together with his wife. Martin got his favourite La-Z-Boy barcalounger in 1968, which a year later he was sitting in watching the moon landings.

During the 1970's Martin became a detective for the police, and in 1974 he started investigating the Weeping Lotus Murder Case, something which would take him 20 years to solve. He also saw Sam Malone play a few baseball games in Boston. Martin and Hester were now alone as both their sons had left home. Martin did not have a very good relationship with his sons as they were completely different to him. Martin had always felt the odd one out in his family, as everyone else was a psychiatrist, and when his wife died in 1987 Martin felt even more alone. His first grandchild, Frederick Crane, was born in 1989. In 1991 Martin was shot in the hip by David Hicks during an attempted robbery at a store, forcing him to retire from the police. Martin struggled to adapt to his new life, but he did buy a dog, Eddie, for company.

A few months after Frasier moved back to Seattle in 1993, Martin had to move in with him as he could no longer live alone, and Daphne Moon was hired to look after him. This move turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Martin has made vast improvements in his relationship with his sons. In 1997 Martin met Sherry Dempsey, who became the first woman he could say "I love you" to - and mean it - since Hester died. They broke up in 1998 and Martin had a few more girlfriends afterwards. He started working again part time as a security guard in 2001, and in 2003 he fell in love with Ronee Lawrence, the boy's old babysitter who had come back into their lives, and they married in 2004.

Personality

Martin could not be any more different from his sons. Whereas they like opera, he likes sports. They like fine wines, he likes Ballantine's beer. As such he has not always had a good relationship with his sons, and even though he has always loved them dearly he has had many arguments with them in the past (one of them led to Frasier telling his friends in Boston that Martin was dead!). Things are much better now, and Martin is now good friends with his sons. He is much more down to earth than Frasier and Niles and will often offer them a simple, down to earth solution for their problems. Martin has many friends from the army and the police, and often meets up with them at his favourite bar McGinty's. There are also the people at the park where he walks Eddie. Martin likes to watch TV, particularly sports programmes and "blooper" shows such as America's Funniest Home Videos, and play poker with the guys. His favourite movie star is Angie Dickenson. He can be a bit of a prude at times, and can also be old fashioned on things such as love, but he has opened up over the years.

Martin Crane is played by John Mahoney. He first appeared in Ep 1 "The Good Son".
