History of Currituck County
"Curriutck County is the most northeastern county in North Carolina.  It was established in 1668 and was one of the five original ports in North Carolina.  The world "Currituck" originally "Caratoke" in the Algonquian Indian language, means "The Land of the Wild Goose."  The abundant waters, marshes, fields and woods still available in the county enable Currituck to enjoy a national and international reputation as a "Sportsmans's Paradise."  Hunting and fishing guides still operate in Currticuk as they have for centuries and visitors an residents alike take pleasure in these outdoor activities.  Rich soils and an ideal climate have provided marketable products since the early 1800's.  The agricultural community has and continues to be an important component to the heritage and economy of Currituck County.  Numerous roadside stands are dotted along highways 168 and 158 and sell a variety of fresh local produce each summer."

"
History of the land can still be spotted every where you look.  In my last trip to Currituck, I couldn't help but notice that the history of the land still is visible alongside of the new and improved developments.  Shopping centers, grocery stores, and more just a few yards from the hisorical Currituck Lighthouse.  Though this seems sort of odd, it all blended together to let you enjoy the new while keeping in mind its historic nature."
