Harry Frier's Taunton and the Town Today. |
A painting of the River Tone from Town Bridge, looking upstream, painted in 1905 together with a recent photograph from that same place. The gas holder was demolished in 1985. |
Below is a painting of 1899. This shows Compass Hill and Cann Street on left and Eye Infirmary and Westgate Inn on right. The lanterns of Shire Hall can be seen above the houses that have been demolished as has the Compass Inn on left of painting. The Eye Infirmary on right of painting is now a private residence but the Westgate Inn survives. The Shire Hall can be seen more clearly now. Traffic is usually heavy at this busy junction. |
I would like to thank Somerset County Council for their kind permission to reproduce these paintings. |
A picture painted in 1908 of St. John's Church. The buildings to right still exist. I could not photo the Church from the same angle as the painting as there are many new buildings in the way. My photo is from the other side of the church. |

Two paintings of Taunton. On left is dated 1903 and on right is 1898. Poor painting materials have resulted in the green fading to light blue. Again it is impossible to photo these scenes as there are so many new buildings in the way. However all the churches exist today and are in use. |
