Self-Development |
||
|
||
It's not what happens to us,
but our response to what happens to us that hurts us. As a well-spent day brings
happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death. The ultimate measure of man
is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where
he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Before you put on a frown,
make sure you are absolutely certain there are no smiles available. I claim to be no more than
an average man with below averages capabilities. I have not the shadow
of a doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have if he or she
would put forward the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith. If all the year were playing
holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work. Those who do not find time
for exercise will have to find time for illness. That which we persist in doing
becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed, but
that our ability to do has increased. It is the weak who are cruel.
Gentleness can only be expected from the strong. What we do in life, echoes
an eternity. To accomplish great things,
we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. It is by acts and not ideas
that people truly live. There is nothing permanent
except change. Right now we've got freedom
AND responsibility. It's a very groovy time. |

Happiness |
||
|
||
The grand essentials of happiness
are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. If a man is happy in his work
exerting himself to the full extent of his capabilities, and enjoying
it, I'd say he's a success. All animals, except man, know
that the principal business of life is to enjoy it. Let everyone try and find
that as a result of daily prayer he adds something with which nothing
can be compared. Work like you don't need the
money; love like you've never been hurt; and dance like you do when nobody's
watching. My friend, let's not think
of tomorrow, but let's enjoy this fleeting moment of life. |
||
Love |
||
|
||
It is only with the heart
that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. Love is¡¦.. A true man does not need to
romance a different girl every night, a true man romances the same girl
for the rest of her life. Let no one who loves be unhappy.
Even love unreturned has its rainbow. Love is the language our hearts
use to speak to one another. For you, my dear, my heart sings. Love doesn't just sit there,
like a stone, it has to be made, like bread, re-made all the time, made
new. Love is the tact of every
good. "Spread love everywhere
you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to
your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor... Let no one ever come
to you without leaving better and happier. |
||
Kindness and Service to Others |
||
|
||
This is the final test of
a gentleman: his respect for those who can be of no possible service to
him. Be the living expression of
God's kindness; kindness in your face; kindness in your eyes; kindness
in your smile; and kindness in your greetings. I believe that what self-centered
men have torn down, men other-centered can build up. It is more noble to give yourself
completely to one individual than to labor diligently for the salvation
of the masses. |
||
Family |
||
|
||
As the family goes, so goes
the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live. If you can give your son or
daughter only one gift, let it be enthusiasm. Marriage is full of sorrows
and full of joys. It lies under more burdens but it is supported by all
the strengths of love, and those burdens are delightful. |
||
Learning |
||
|
||
After three days without reading,
talk becomes flavorless. The world is a book, and those
who do not travel, read only a page. Knowledge is proud that he
has learned so much; wisdom is humble that he knows no more. Once and for all, there is
a great deal I do not want to know. Wisdom sets bounds even to knowledge. |
||
Humor |
||
|
||
You can't have everything.
Where would you put it? Beer is proof that God loves
us and wants us to be happy. Put your hand on a hot stove
for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an
hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity. If A equals success, then
the formula is: A = X + Y + Z Love your neighbors, but don't
pull down the fence. |

Philosophical |
||
|
||
Darkness has no existence
of it's own. It's only a lack of light. He lives most life whoever
breathes most air. I want the cultures of all
the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. Nothing is more despicable
than respect based on fear. There are only two ways to
live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as
though everything is a miracle. I disapprove of what you say,
but I will defend to the death your right to say it. It is difficult to overcome
one's passion, and impossible to satisfy them. Life consists with wildness.
The most alive is the wildest. Not yet subdued to man, its presence refreshes
him. |
