Legend of the Snoddy Name

During the reign of Charles I of England they (the Catholics?) sent to Scotland the barbarous Clavenhouse, who killed prisoners on sight, cut off women's ears, split noses, made children walk on hot ashes, burnt houses, churches, towns and caused general destruction.

The edict was given that all Proestants should be killed as soon as captured. A prominent Presbytarian named Fergus was captured. Being to prominent too be killed at once he was sentenced for "day after tomorrow".

He planned to escape on "tomorrow night" - but a severe snow storm arose so he escaped during the day of "tomorrow'. He fled to Ireland and there in order to hide his identity and in memory of the day he escaped, he called himself in broad Scot - "Snow Day", which we in English have made "Snoddy" meaning "a snow day".

NOTES:

7. James Lewis Snoddy, b. 3 August 1742 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, d. 27 November 1826 at Buckingham County, Virginia

James Snoddy reportedly fought with General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown.

The following is a record as given by Thomas Bransford, son of Ann Lee Snoddy Bransford which is in the possession of Josephine Snoddy:

"Of the three brothers remaining in eastern Virginia, my grandfather, James Snoddy, was the oldest. He resided on the place settled by his father in 1758 [Buckingham County, Virginia] nearly 70 acres. About 1780 he went to the Holsten settlement, raised a crop 1781 and was far down on that stream, then frontier, as the mouth of the Watauga. After the maturity of his crop in 1781, he returned to eastern Virginia intending to move his family that fall to Holsten. But Providence ordered otherwise. Virginia was at that time invaded by the British under Lord Cornwallis. Patriotism called him in another direction. He joined the army of Virginia and was present as a soldier at the surrender of that distinguished General to the illustrious Washington. When his term of service had expired an uncommonly severe winter had set in. The comtemplated removal to Holsten was abandoned and the remainder of his life - which was extended to a period of about 44 years was spent in the county of Buckingham, Virginia."

"I have seen him often and conversed with him frequently when I was a little boy. He was rather an uncommon man. He had a good constitution, a retentive memory, and read a great deal. From the earliest recollections of my mother he was a member of the Presbytarian Church. Prayer regularly in his family night and morning. His disposition was naturally kind and amiable, and he was scrupulously conscientious and honest in his dealings with all mankind. He was opposed to litigation or contention and never resorted to law to enforce his rights. After his death his executor found among his papers notes on one of his neighbors for money loaned (silver) before the Seige of York which had never been paid. He was a good man and lived and died universally respected by all who knew him. He is buried on the place which he lived."

NOTES:

8. John Snoddy, b.ca. 1720 at County Antrim, Ireland, d. February 1784 near Abbington, Washington County, Virginia

After the war John Snoddy and his wife lived in Washington County, Virginia not far from Abbington. From several sources we get that he lived near the northwest part of that county on a river called "Little River", "on as fine a body of land as ever a crow flew over". This he had purchased from the natives for a rifle and horn powder. On account of massacres and danger from natives, he left that place and went some 20 miles southeast to near Abbington, Virginia, where he died. In 1785 and 1786 his two youngest sons married sisters named "Davis" and early in 1787 or 1788 we find them in Tennessee. Their mother with them. Agnes Glasgow died December 30, 1801.

A John and his brother James Snoddy were probably children of John Snoddy, whose will, dated 21 Ocober 1735 and proved 24 May 1736, appointed John McConour executor, but did not name any children. Will Book A-1, 22:1736, Lancaster County, Pensylvania. On the sixth day of December 1748 in Orphans Court for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, James and John Snoddy made choice of John Laird to be their guardian. From: Don Yoder. Pennsylvania Vital Records. Vol.1. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983. This James and John Snoddy were probably the children of William Snoddy, married Mary Laird. William Snoddy died May 1735. His son James died at age 27 years of consumption and John died during his apprenticeship of a gun shot wound. Mary Laird Snoddy remarried James Ireland ca. 1737 and bore him three children: William, Elizabeth and Mary, the youngest, who married John MacFarland. William was probably another son of John Snoddy who died bef. May 1736. It does seem odd that both William and John died young and both had only two children both named John and James.

Spouse: 8. Agnes Glasgow, b. 7 December 1725 at Irvine, Ayr, Scotland, d. 30 December 1801 near Witt's Foundry, Jefferson County, Tennessee, buried at Leadville, Tennessee
Agnes Glasgow's father was William Glasgow and her mother was Margaret Montfodd/Montfort. From Elaine Comes: "William GLasgow had a brother named Hugh who married Janet Kilpatrick. They were sons of John Glasgow and Agnes Spark."

It has been told that Agnes met John Snoddy on their journey to American. Agnes and John supposedly fell in love on board the ship and married not long after arriving in America. Agnes Glasgow's birth taken from Scotland Files, Irvine, Ayr, Scotland, Church of L.D.S. Batch C115952, Input 2326, printout 1041383. This image file appears to be from a vestry book recording births.
