Back to school!!! Think of the GOOD stuff about it:

- You get to see old friends that don't live close to you.
- Sports and extracurricular activities start up again.
- You get to refresh your memories and learn lots of new stuff.
- Vacation might be boring if you had to do it all the time!
Hispanic Heritage Month
is celebrated from September 15 to October 14 each year. Celebrations might include everything from having a party featuring pinatas and dancing to simply enjoying some tacos and beans for dinner. One of granni's new favorite websites, FactMonster, has a special page with links to all sorts of wonderful activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Visit the LibrarySpot for just about anything you need to know - a GREAT place to get started on your homework!

The HomeworkSpot is best of all for homework. It takes you right to the place you're looking for!
...and if all that isn't enough, you can always check out Brendan Kehoe's Kids on the Web site for more links!
Recently one of my grandchildren said, "You're really stylin' gramma!" and although I never heard the word before, I knew what she meant! Why? Because I know what the word style means! Here's the dictionary meaning. Keep in mind that it's a noun.

style n. (pronounced stile - rhymes with aisle or I'll)
The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed: a style of speech and writing.
The combination of distinctive features of literary or artistic expression, execution, or performance characterizing a particular person, group, school, or era.

... but when I looked up styling I found nothing! Why? It's not yet recognized in the dictionary as a word. It might be someday though. That's how the English language evolves. You might say stylin' is a colloquial usage of the word style, or maybe it's just a slang word - made up to mean "one who has a certain style."
Okay, it's obvious that many of you already know what the word style means so granni's word for the month is.....
colloquial    \kuh-LOH-kwee-uhl\, adjective:
characteristic of informal spoken language or conversation; "wrote her letters in a colloquial style"; "the broken syntax and casual enunciation of colloquial English"; hence, unstudied; informal; as, colloquial phrases; a colloquial style.

Have you noticed how some people sound different than you? Sometimes that may be because they grew up in a different country and their native language differs from yours. Sometimes it could be because they grew up in the same country as you but a different
region - or part - of the country. Some of their words and phrases are probably colloquial. We're all familiar with bottled beverages often referred to as "soda" - or is the word "pop" - I guess it depends on what you learned to call it when you were little, right? Viva la difference! (That's French for "Hurray for Individuality!")
Definitions were all found at my favorite quick reference site: Dictionary.com. Wondering what the official definition is for the word "slang"? Click on the link and find out for yourself!
