Grease 2 Trivia & Goofs |
Here are some little known facts about the making of the movie. |
TRIVIA: One of the first movie musical sequels since the Broadway Melody series of the 1920s, '30s and '40s. 'Pat Birch' , the director of this film, was the dance choreographer in the original. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John met with the studio to discuss reprising their roles but weren't pursued further after the initial conference. Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) was originally going to have a cameo as the Bowling Alley Manager, This idea was scrapped. Originally planned to be the second installment in a franchise of four movies and a TV series. However, once the movie flopped, plans for a franchise were thrown out. Had a 58 day shooting schedule. Pamela Seagull (Dolores) was unable to complete filming because she got into a car accident on her way to the set midway through. The majority of the scenes featuring her were already filmed, but stand-ins were used some scenes, such as the talent show sequence. Director Pat Birch said by the time filming began, the script wasn't even complete yet, so she had to try her best to work with what she had. Director Pat Birch said the movie was originally going to be titled "Son of Grease", but producers wanted something more straightforward and less confusing, so it was switched to "Grease 2". Maxwell Caulfield (Michael Carrington) tried hard to get it changed back, saying that "Grease 2" was a boring title. His attempts were unsuccessful. Scenes that featured Frenchy (Didi Conn) helping Michael (Maxwell Caulfield) act like a T-Bird, ride his motorcycle, and giving him cooler clothes were cut from the film in post production. Several scenes/sequences were cut from the film, including scenes where Frenchy tries to help Michael become a "cool rider", Michael talking to Stephanie and comforting her after the talent show scene, and a sequence at the very end of the film where Michael and Stephanie fly off into the sunset on a motorcycle, similar to the ending of "Grease", where Danny and Sandy fly off into the sunset in a car. This movie marks the first moment Michelle Pfeiffer ever appeared in a starring role. Grease 2 was filmed almost entirely at Norwalk, California's Excelsior High School. Matt Lattanzi and Olivia Newton John met on the set of Grease 2 and later married. The two have since divorced. Michelle Pfiffer' 's song "Cool Rider" was adlibbed. There were two deleted scenes from the movie. One was of Frenchy (Didi Conn) giving Michael instructions on how to be a T-Bird, the other was from the end of the "Turn back the hands of time" number. After Stephanie finishes the song, she is awakened from her dream by a very alive Michael. I am sure this last scene was deleted to keep the mystery of whether Michael lived or died in his motorcycle crash. As for the other, it was most likely deleted for pacing purposes. To see a clip of the deleted dream scene, visit the Ultimate Grease 2 site, and click on "Cutting Room Floor." GOOFS: Continuity: Sharon's hair as the girls walk into the chemistry lab. Anachronisms: The movie is explicitly set in 1961 (two years after the first film). Yet during the opening "Back to School" production number, basketball players are shown dribbling red, white and blue basketballs. These tri-colored balls were not introduced until the founding of the American Basketball Association (the ABA) in the fall of 1967. Continuity: After the song "Who's that guy?" on the widescreen version, the couple that were sitting on the same car as the pink ladies enter the Bowlarama twice. Continuity: During the luau people appear and disappear on the boat. Revealing mistakes: When Michael jumps the police car, the ramp is visible. Anachronisms: The motorcycles that everyone is riding were made in the early '70s and as the movie takes place in 1961. Continuity: The students in Mr. Spears class are all different when the sub takes over. Now all the people who were in Ms. Mason's class have joined (presumably so that all the stars can be in the song). Revealing mistakes: At the end when a bike flips into the pool, the cord that is used to make the bike flip is visible. Continuity: In the cafeteria, one of the original Pink Ladies is an extra. She was supposed to have graduated two years before. Continuity: After the twins fall into the pool with Balmudo during the luau they reappear in the crowd behind the T-Birds nice and dry when Michael gets his jacket. Audio/visual unsynchronized: Towards the end of "Lets Score Tonight', a close-up of Johnny, where he looks at the camera, shows him singing the wrong lyrics. Continuity: At the bowling alley, after the cool rider encounter, Johnny is leaning over a cigarette machine, giving us the impressing he just bought some, but there is an out of order sign on it. Continuity: In the scene where the T-Birds are going to meet Balmudo. Notice that Nagorelli has a cigarette in his mouth as they step outside. Then the camera switches to Balmudo, and then back to the T-Birds. Where did Nagorelli's cigarette go? A pretty easy mistake to spot. Continuity: During the motorcycle chase outside the Bowl-a-Rama, Michael has on a white t-shirt under his black leather jacket. After he lights Stephanie's cigarette and sees the police, he starts the motorcycle -- he does not have on a white t-shirt. But, he has it on when he jumps over the police car. Revealing mistakes: Watch the movie to then end where they are having the talent contest. As the main character, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, kneels down to sing her solo, look at the girl in the background dressed as a wine glass with fake legs hanging out of the top. Instead of singing the song, she's just opening and closing her mouth. Revealing mistakes: When Stephanie and Michael are eating at the diner working on Hamlet....she orders a hamburger. She gets the hamburger and says, "No ketchup!" She puts the ketchup on the hamburger and takes a bite. She offers a bite to Michael, and it is a sliced ham and lettuce sandwich. When he says, "No," she takes a bite of a hamburger. |
