KILIMANJARO
Day 3 - Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m./14,289 ft)
This morning a member of our group decided to turn back.  The altitude was becoming too much.
The remaining 9 of us pushed on...

The toilets on the mountain are called "Long Drops."
Today was a short but steep hike with superb panoramas of the plains across the border in Kenya.
All went well until we did an acclimatization hike at the end of the day.  My heart was beating so fast I couldn't talk.  My head was pounding.  Tears started flooding my eyes and my nose started pouring like a tap.  I had to descend.  We hiked back down to our camp a couple hundred meters below and some of us were basically bedridden.  I laid down in the tent and took some ibuprofen.  I had also been taking DIAMOX for altitude sickness.  My resting heart rate, which is normally around 72 beats per minute was 102.  I was walking at half the speed.  I forced myself to go for afternoon tea in our mesh tent.  I was losing my appetite and feeling nauseous.
