In my experience with editing Wolf 3D there are four "corners" to editing. In one corner there is Graphics. Graphics include everything visual in your levels. In another corner is Sound. Sounds include the sounds you hear in the game including the music. In the third corner is Coding. In '94 id made the Wolf 3D source code free. This is basically programming. The how and why of what you see when you do or don't do it. In the last but certainly not least corner is Maps. Or levels these obviosuly make up what you play or the architecture thereof. Without good levels all the other factors mean almost zero. Good map design, however, can make some of the shoddiest graphics bearable if not good. Here is a more in-depth review of each of the "corners of editing." Graphics - As I said, they are all the visuals in your game. They are the weapon you hold, the enemy you slaughter, the walls and doors you run into and much more. They make the level realistic or not. They can give it different moods. Make a level with bright blue bricks and bright green oil barrels and you have a cartoonish atmosphere which is very enjoyable in its own class (which is also the style of Wolf itself). Now paint the walls a darker, cooler color and have your barrels overflowing with oil and grime and you've got a grittier more "Doomish" look. Now if either of these have bad quality it makes the atmosphere feel frustrating and pointless. I'll go more into depths about the right and wrongs in my Graphics Tutorials. There two editing tools to edit graphics, Wolf Edit and FloEdit which are covered in Editing Utilities. Not to mention Spear of Destiny... Sound - Sound can make or break the mood. It is the noisy counterpart to the graphics. While mood-setting and powerful it shouldn't be...well..."cheesy" That is if you're recording your own sounds put life into it. Create it with the mindset that you're in a German occupied castle in the 1940's and you gotta get out! Music is just the same. Now if you can create your own MIDIs I have no idea how to advise you. Really this is the subject I am least educated on. I have neither the right tools or the ability (my own PC's sound setup doesn't allow more than "PC Speaker" sounds while playing Wolf.) to edit sound. I test my sound changes at one of my friend's house. There are three editing tools: WolfSnd for the registered version of Wolf, WolfAud for the shareware version, and FloEdit for both. Coding - Like I said, in 1994 id Software released the Source Code to the general public as freeware. With no instruction, and no help about it whatsoever from id Wolfers were left to figure it out themselves. And believe me...they did. It began with a few ceiling and floor color changes here and a few secret level switching there and soon we had floor and ceiling textures. (yes, recently Chaos Software released a demo engine which featured just that) So in other words people soon began making their own very innovative modifications to the Engine utilizing the Source Code. Maps - The heart and sould of Wolf 3D editing is map editing. To sum it up Wolf is plain boring without good levels. The one thing I hate with a passion is that retarded "Level Creator" program. It's worse than bad levels which are original. To bare and symmetrical. Map editing is done with two programs (to my knowledge) which are FloEdit and Mapedit, both covered in Editing Utilites. |
