Oklahoma Bombing
It was a very ordinary work day. I got up at 5:30 a.m., got my coffee started and while it was brewing, I took my shower. There was absolutely nothing that would lead me to believe that this day would be any different from any other or that it would change my life so much. I finished my coffee, got dressed, did my hair and took off to start my day. When I got to the office it was then 7 a.m., everything was just as it should be. My boss had left town the day before on a business trip and therefore, his office was locked. The others in the building were all doing their normal jobs. At 9:02 a.m. there was a tremendous sound of an explosion. Everyone in the front office ran to the windows and looked out. Our office is located next to a very large vacant lot. We thought that a small plane had crashed in the field next to us because the sound was so close. Our whole building shook and rattled for a good couple of minutes. When we could see nothing, a couple of the guys ventured out of the building to have a good look around. Still.........nothing! They came back inside and we all talked about it for a minute or two speculating on what it might have been, never getting close to the real reason. Then we all went back to work and after a few minutes the office manager turned on the radio on her desk. Wow...we couldn't believe what we were hearing. A bomb had gone off in downtown Oklahoma City and destroyed the Murrah Building and the occupants! OH MY GOD!!!!! We quickly got the key to my bosses office and opened it up to gain access to the TV kept there for viewing training tapes. After a couple of minutes, it was rolled out into the front reception area so that everyone could gather to watch the news that was being broadcast. It was totally unbelievable...something you would expect to hear happening in one of the countries that were constantly in a war...but not here, not here! We weren't at war! The next thing I knew..everyone was crying..men and women alike..! Crying for the children and the others that had been destroyed with this monstrous act. Everyone was in shock and all of our families tried to call in to see if we were ok...our plant was 4 miles east of the bomb site. The phones were so busy that no one could get through, so my son drove to the plant to check on me. He told us how everything in the city was jamed and packed with emergency vehicles of all descriptions. As we watched the news coverage, we were all speechless. Nothing in our lives had ever prepared us for what had just happened. We all wanted to leave work and rush right down to the site and help in any way that we could, but the broadcast was telling everyone to stay away until they made sure that the site was secured. So we watched, prayed, and waited; for what, we weren't sure. Later that night, after work, I talked to my sisters and they told me that they had gone down and volunteered. Judy worked everyday at the Feed The Children Organization. They prepared meals for the victims, victims family members, policemen, firemen, doctors, nurses, and volunteers. They gathered and handed out food, blankets, and kind words. They took drinks down to the site for the workers that were doing the worst part...the searching and digging out of our people. Everyone seemed to live with the TV going. It was always centered on the bombing and the heroic efforts being made to find survivors. You couldn't seem to eat or sleep or concentrate on anything else. This was the new way our lives ran for the longest time. Nothing was the same...everyday began and ended with the bombing and all of our prayers. The nation came together to help us and we really needed them. We couldn't have gotten through this without the help of so many. To this very day you are all in our prayers. We, here in Oklahoma, will never forget the kindness of all the strangers that stepped in to help us during this crisis. You are the Angels of Mercy and God Bless each and every one of you. The simple words; Thank You, just don't convey enough feeling and fall short of the gratitude that each of us feel. May God bless you and keep you safe througout your lifetime.
