Are you concerned with homophobia? Are you or is someone you know hurt and affected by it? CHALLENGING HOMOPHOBIA AT THOMPSON is what CHAT is all about. We are a Gay-Straight Alliance at David Thompson Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Welcome to our website! :)
About CHAT

We are a team of staff and students committed to making David Thompson a safe and enjoyable place to be for everybody. The issue of homosexuality is a sensitive subject, but it is a subject, which must be discussed. Even the perception that someone is gay is enough to trigger some people into harassing, teasing, alienating and/or abusing that person.
THIS IS WRONG AND MUST BE CHALLENGED AND STOPPED!

We mean to unite, not divide
Gay or straight, let's hear your side

                                              GUIDELINES

Confidentiality
: any personal information shared within the group shall  remain  within the group. That is, identities and personal issues should never be discussed outside the group setting, unless it has been specifically agreed upon by all involved.

Non-judgemental environment: any person who wishes to express their opinions or share their stories should feel safe to do so. As well, each person receives the undivided attention from all members of the group when speaking. Side discussions would be inappropriate at this time.

Do not make assumptions about any other member’s sexual orientation. Remember, gay or straight, we are an alliance and are all here for a common goal.

Respect: It is important to remember that coming out (disclosing one’s own sexual orientation) is a personal decision and must be respected by all members of the group. It is NEVER acceptable to “out” someone, meaning to disclose somebody else’s sexual orientation without his or her permission or knowledge (this rule applies both within and outside of the group setting).

Hello every one! Thanks for dropping by! CHAT is thrilled to be entering its FIFTH full year. We hope to have some new and enthusiastic members join us this year! We are all committed to the same goal. Safety, care and acceptance of all people!  We look forward to a fun year of  projects and activities and we would love to have YOU join us! Come check us out!

WE WILL HAVE OUR FIRST MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPT 28 AT LUNCH IN ROOM 209
HOMOPHOBIA - is both the individual and collective fear of gays and lesbians, as well as bisexuals and transgendered, and the hatred, disgust and prejudice that fear brings. Check out 10 Ways Homophobia Affects Straight People.

HETEROSEXISM -  is the promotion of the superiority of heterosexuality and the assumption that everyone is heterosexual and that being heterosexual is inherently better than being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered.

SOME OF THE THINGS WE WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS YEAR:

Set up a display for clubs day on Oct 6th.
Recognize World AIDS Day on Dec 1st.
Hook up with some of the other groups in the school.

Have some theme meetings!
Have another movie night or two!
Renew the rainbow sticker campaign
Any other ideas our members come up with

Last year, CHAT set up a display in the foyer to commemorate World AIDS Day. We also hosted a contest to promote AIDS awareness. To enter, a 10 question multiple choice quiz was given and a winner was drawn from over 140 entries.
Please goto Current Events to view the answers to the quiz.

We had a very successful Friday Film Festival in January where we showed a couple "shorts" and featured the full length film "Better Than Chocolate". It was a very good time and was hilighted in two separate newspaper articles (The Georgia Straight & The Vancover Sun)

We always looking for new ideas and fresh perspectives. Everyone is welcome to become a part of our group. We hope to see you soon!

Check here for more updates as we proceed through the year.
