EMERGENCY SURGERY - SUPERMAS

Yet another SUPERMAS came into the surgery. However this one had a definite problem; The barrel was blocked and several BB's could be seen stuck in the HOP unit.

Opening the casing, it was apparant the SUPERMAS was an old model, as it had the original low torque EG560 motor. After removing the gearbox, we investigated the barrel. Winding the HOP to the OFF position, I used the ram rod to free the jammed pellets. This did not prove too hard, although, grit could be felt in the barrel.

Indeed 3 incredibly dirty BB's emerged from the muzzle, although none of them looked badly mangled or miscast. Looking down the barrel, it was obvious that the problem had actually been mud/grit in the barrel, as it was horrificly dirty.

The barrel was cleaned with a large number of silicon pullthroughs. Managing to remove all the dirt, leaving only the scoring behind.

nasty barrel jam...
inside the gearbox...
Opening the gearbox, the low SERIAL NUMBER showed the guns age. Yet it still had the original red seals intact, so had never been opened before.

I checked out the nozzle and found it to be intact, before examining the PISTON rack. Indeed 7 teeth were damaged with slithers of polycarb inbetween them. However, the teeth are all still capable of running on the gears, so will not need immediate replacement.

But moving onto the gears, it became apparant that the pinion gear had lost 2 teeth on the smallest ratio.
The customer provided a scrap MAS to cannabalise for parts to get this SUPERMAS running again.  The donor gun had the gears intact, so the transplant went without a hitch.

The finished article works fine, although, it could do with a new piston to get better performance and improve it's lifespan.

The moral of this case, is to stop firing immediatly, should you suffer a barrel jam. Trying to clear the pellets by firing (even with the mag out) can cause terrible damage to you gearbox. Stop firing and use the RAMROD (as in the TM manual.) Remember to turn your HOP off first.
