Although a native Californian, Marc has a musical taste for different styles from all over the world. He began his musical quest at the early age of "before he was born" when his parents came up with the profound idea of singing to him while he was still in the womb!, influencing him with country, standard, rock 'n' roll, as well as ethnic folk music from their national origin. Following his dad's lead, he learned to play piano and guitar when he was young. At age 10, he decided to learn the drums and joined the school band. He enjoyed playing rhythm, so his dad bought him a drum set and Marc's older brothers an electric guitar and bass guitar. They formed a band playing popular hits of the time and performed mostly for family parties. Marc continued playing in the school bands including symphonic, jazz, and percussion bands. Eventually he found himself in marching band field show competitions. He and a few of his fellow band members formed the band, Eternal Psychic Dreams, with Marc on the drums, to perform for a school talent show. In college, Marc took a break from drums to learn Hawaiian, Tahitian and Pilipino instruments and music. He rejoined his brothers and an old friend to form a Hawaiian band, Nativ Sun, this time playing a much different instrument, the ukulele. Marc adopted the new style of music and spent the next 10 years devoting his musical studies to it. But it was only a matter of time before his desire to return to the drums hit. With four of his coworkers itching to play the music, Marc found his chance to get back behind the drum set. |

Born and raised in the Philippines, Nestor first picked up an accoustic guitar during his high school years. It wasn't until he made his way to Rome that his desire to go to the next level arose. Listening to friends playing music, he developed an interest to learn the electric guitar and keyboards. Through tutelage of his friends and his own persistent practicing, he developed his great talent. Soon after, he formed the band, Kissmakers, and took on the lead guitar position. After years of performing in countless restaurants and party halls of Italy, he came to the United States. Hookin' up with a keyboardist, he reunited with two of his brothers and formed another band, Rice Crispies, again as lead guitarist. Even today, Rice Crispies continues to entertain at parties and festivals. Whenever the topic of music comes up, Nestor is never too shy to join the conversation. While chatting with his coworker, Marc, the two realized their common musical interests. They would occasionally get together for jam sessions. |

Mel was born in Laos, but his family took him and fled the country to a Thai refugee camp, where they lived for 3 years. One of his favorite pastimes there was watching and listening to performers play musical instruments. He was especially fond of the ones who played the khene, which is a Lao instrument popular in Laos and Northeast Thailand. This is where his interest in playing music began. When they came to the U.S., Mel's interest in playing music heightened when his older brother joined a band playing keyboards. His brother taught him to play the keyboards, and Mel was eager to learn. The lead guitarist in his brother's band also tried to teach Mel the guitar and form a young musicians band with his brother and friends. Unfortunately, Mel was at that age when kids prefer the playground to the guitar. Mel went on to take a keyboard class in high school and learned how to read music. Many years later, while at work, he became intrigued with the idea of playing in a band when four of his coworkers planned a jam session. Lucky for him, they just happened to be in need of a keyboardist... or lucky for them?!! |
With his father in the military, Joey was born in Guam, but moved away shortly after birth. However, he returned to the island with his family at the age of 8. This is when he received his first ukulele as a gift from his parents. He recalls tagging his uke with words like "groovy" and phrases like "right on", but that didn't mean that he didn't take his playing seriously. He played his uke as often as he could in the next several years, then wanted to raise his level of playing to the next step, the guitar. From that point, he continually challenged himself to become a better guitarist, playing solo and whenever possible, with other musicians and bands. At age 22, a friend told him that his dance group needed drummers. Fascinated by the idea, he went to see the group and so began a new phase in his life. He became a Tahitian drummer for Buddy Carson. After about 3 years of performances and competitions, Joey wanted to study drumming from another teacher with a great reputation and talent for drumming, Tiare Clifford, with whom he performed for numerous years. He also sought hula lessons from Linda Danek and played guitar in her Hawaiian band for a while. He and Marc actually met at a Hawaiian festival at Paramount's Great America before meeting again where they currently work. They got together sporadically to play Tahitian drums for practice and for talent shows at work before the idea of Master Formula came about. |
Steve's mother had a friend who collected guitars. As a birthday gift, he sold Steve one of his bass guitars for a good price. Steve trifled with the bass for years but didn't get the opportunity to play in a band setting until his Shakespeare endeavor. He took a role in a musical for "Midsummer Night's Dream" at a local theater. One night after a performance, he and a couple of his co-actors closed the theater and decided to hold a jam session. Steve played his bass, one actor sang, another actor played the bongos and invited a friend to play guitar. They composed and played original numbers. They got serious enough to band for over a year under the name, Dr. Shmooz, eventually finding themselves gigging at the renowned Roxy. Putting an ad in the papers, they found a drummer to form a new band with a different sound. This new band, One Good Eye, graced bars and restaurants around California and even recorded a CD. When he met his co-worker Mel, he was told that there were a few musicians in their company that occasionally performed together. Mel introduced Steve to them and Master Formula was imminent. |
"Mojo Jojo" was born in San Francisco and has since resided in California. At age 6, two years of piano lessons became his only performing experience other than his occasional karaoke endeavors. His great love for music is what gives him his drive to continually study up the art and his favorite musicians. He's particularly fond of the works of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and ... the Police?!! Not until hooking up with M.F. has he taken his piano playing seriously and begun to develop his percussion playing. |
