When frozen, they can be eaten like apples. Beans : no description, comes in many variety, sizes and colors as on Earth. Biscuits : made of Sa-Tarna flour , flat biscuits that are baked over warming stones. Black Bread : similar to Earth's pumpernickle bread, heavy and dark from from Gorean grains . It is baked soft and full of flavor, often served with clotted Bosk Cream and honey. Bond-Maid Gruel : also known as slave porridge. The fare usually served to bond-maids in Torvaldsland, it is made of dampened Sa-Tarna and raw fish. Bosk : similar to the Earth buffalos. A large, shaggy, long horned bovine. Just like Earth's cows, the bosk is used for many purpose. Its meat is served as Earth's beef, its milk is used as drink and in food preparation, its skin tanned in used for clothing. Butter : made of Bosk and/or Verr milk that has been churned into a rich creamy butter. Cabbages : no description given. Candy : soft, rounded, succulent candies, usually covered with a coating of syrup or fudge, rather in the nature of the caramel apple, but much smaller, and, like a caramel apple, mounted on sticks. The candy is prepared and the stick, from the bottom, is thrust up, deeply, into it ( also see below Mint Sticks) Cheese : a hard cheese with a sharp taste similar to Earth's stronger cheddars. Made from Bosk milk, it is perfect for travelling, resisting mold well. Cherries : fruit from the region of Tyros. Cosian Wingfish : also known as songfish. A tiny blue fish that dwells in salt-water off Port Kar, it has been dubbed songfish because of its whistling mating song. Its liver is considered a delicacy in Turia if one can catch the fish without getting poisoned from the the 4 deadly spines on its dorsal fin. Dates : fruit grown in the City of Tor. It is an important part the diet of the Tahari people. The can be found at the market; sold in a tef (a small handful with the 5 fingers closed) , a tefa ( a small basket holding the equivalent of 6 tefs ) or a huda ( constituted of five tefas ). Dates are also used for trade, it is then compressed into large bricks that are easily carrried. -Book 10: Tribesman of Gor, page 46 Eel : similar to the eels of Earth, they come in many varieties such as the river eel, the black eel and the spotted eel. Some of those varieties are edible and considered to be a delicacy in Gor. Gorean eels are voracious animal that can easily maim or kill a slave in moments. Eggs : come in as many sizes and varieties as there are species of birds on Gor, but vulo eggs are usually used for meals. Fish, Parsit : one of the main ingredient in slaves gruel, it is a silvery fish with brown stripes. Used for trade with the south by Torvaldsland, it is smoked and dried, stored in barrels to be sold. Garlic : not described in detail. Grunts : a fish that comes in many variety. The Great Speckled swims in the Thassa, sailor catch it for food. The White-bellied lives in the Polar North, it is a large game fish that usually lies in wait in the plankton beds to eat parsit fish that come there to feed. It's eggs are considered a rare delicacy similar to Earth`s caviar. Honey : no description given.. just that honey bees are raised. kanda : A small shrub found in the Gorean desert. It's thick, leathery leaves can be used for medicinal purpose; when chewed they have a narcotic effect that can easily become addictive. Its roots contain a lethal substance that can be used as poison when extracted. -Book 4: Nomads of Gor, page 43 Katch : similar to Earth's lettuce. A vegetable made of large green leaves. Kes : the main ingredient in sullage. It is the salty blue secondary roots of this shrub that used. -Book 3: Priest-Kings of Gor, page 45 Kort : a large, brownish-skinned vegetable from the Tahari. Sphere-shaped, usually about 6 inches in width, its inside is fibrous and heavily seeded, the succulent meat a yellowish color. It is usually served hot, topped with melted cheese and a sprinkle of nutmeg. -Book 10: Tribesmen of Gor, page 37 Larma : a tree growing fruit, it come in two variety ( 1 - juicy or succulent : a juicy, segmented, succulent fruit similar to Earth's oranges, 2 - hard or applelike : similar to Earth's apple, having one pit, commonly called the pit fruit. It is sometimes sliced and fried, and served with browned honey sauce. . -Book 20: Players of Gor, page 267 ). A girl should never offer to serve larma lightly, it is a well known fact that a slave girl offering a larma to her Master (whether real or in a dance) is begging Him to use her for His pleasure. -Book 23: Renegades of Gor, page 437 Melons : only described as yellowish, red-striped spheres . -Book 10: Tribesman of Gor, page 45 Mint Sticks : just mentioned as tiny mint sticks in a bowl. Mushrooms : no description given. Olives : come in two varieties : Torian Olives (most commonly used) from the City of Tor and Red Olives from the groves of Tyros. Onions : no description given. Pastries : no description given.. Peas : mentioned as a menu item, no description given. Peppers : no description given. Pit fruit : see hard larma above . Radishes : no description given. Raisins : no description given , but since there are grapes ( such as ta-grape) , it is safe to assume there are sun-dried grapes i.e. raisins. They are great for travelling. Ramberries : small, succulent purple-reddish fruits. Berries with edible seeds similar to raspberries, but more like tiny plums in taste. - Book 7: Captive of Gor, page 305 Rence : a tufted water plant (reed-like) that grows in the marshes. Its grain is used for food while the water-clogged stems are harvested and pressed to make paper. It can also be woven into course cloth. Its pith can also be used to make a sort of pancake, by first boiling and grounding it into a paste that is then sweetened and fried. Salt : two types : 1 - white salt : (most common) usually coming from the mines of Klima. 2 - red salt because of its ferrous oxide content. It is sometimes called the Red Salt of Kasra, because it is loaded on to the great ships in the port of Kasra at the juncture of the Upper and Lower Fayeen. Sa-Tarna : wheat grain, yellow in color. It litteraly means 'life-daughter'. Sa-Tarna also refers to a round flat baked bread that is served cut in wedges. Sa-Tarna also is a general term referring to food, meal or fair in general. Slave porridge : also called slave gruel. An unsweetened mixture of water and Sa-Tarna meal, served cold to slaves. Also see 'bond-maid gruel' above. Sorp : similar to Earth's oysters. A shellfish found mostly in the Vosk river. Sugar : 2 varieties are commonly used, the White Sugar and the Yellow Sugar. Both have to be used in the bazi tea ceremony. Sul : similar to Earth's potato. A starchy, golden brown, vegetable that grows on vines also called sul (with large golden leaves) . -Book 3: Priest Kings of Gor, page 44 It is the main ingredient in sullage (see below) and sul paga ( an alcoholic drink similar to Earth's vodka). it can also be served sliced and fried. Sullage : a soup made principally from suls, tur-pah, and kes, along with whatever else may be handy. Tabuk : similar to earth’s gazelle. Known for their speed, they are hunted for their flavorful meat which is usually served roasted. Ta-grapes : similar to Earth’s grapes. They are grown in the in the reputed vineyards of the Isle of Cos. -Book 3: Priest Kings of Gor, page 45 Tambur Gulf Oysters : these oysters found in the Tamber Gulf, can be served raw or baked. Tarsk : similar to Earth’s pig. It is hunted for its meat, often roasted whole over a pit. Tospit : a small peach-like fruit that grows on the tospit bush, which is usually found growing in patches in the dry valleys of the eastern Cartius. A Bitter tasting citrus fruit, it is mostly used for its juice. They can be served sliced, sweetened with honey or sirups to cut down the bitter taste. Often brought in large quantities on sea voyages to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Wrinkled, about the size of a plum, they are yellowish-white in color and come in two variety : short (which carries an odd number of seeds) and the rare long stemmed (which carries an even number of seeds). A tree parasite with curly, red, ovate leaves that is edible. Traditionally hunted with bolos the sport lies in whether you or the bird gets to eat that night Turnip : like Earth’s turnip, it grows around the many oasis of the Tahari. Vangis : type of produce sold at market; detailed description unavailable Verr : a wild mountain goat found in the Voltai Mountains. The ill-tempered beast with spiraling horns is horded for its long hair used as a source of wool. Its milk can also be used as a substitute for Bosk milk and to make cheese. Vulo : similar to Earth’s pigeon. A tawny colored poultry bird, altough domesticated for its meat and eggs, they can also be found in the wild. ![]() Drinks "The Forkbeard himself now, from a wooden keg, poured a great tankard of ale, which must have been the measure of five gallons...It was the victory ale." It is traditionally served in tankards , and is of a deep golden color. Bazi tea : beverage of brewed bazi herbs, served hot with white and yellow sugar. The bazi tea ceremony is kept for very special occasion wherer the tea is traditionally served in 3 tiny cups and drank in rapid succession. Black wine : beverage brewed from the beans of a plant that is grown on the slopes of Thentis it is thought to have come from Earth on a slave acquisition run. It is like Earth’s coffee. Traditionally served in tiny cups, although in most taverns it is served in mugs. If asked to serve it first slave it means to serve it with white and yellow sugars and powdered bosk milk, while second slave means to serve it black. Breeding wine : (also called second wine) a sweet beverage which counteracts the effects of slave wine (also known as first wine), in order to make a slave girl fertile. It is made from an extract of teslik plant. Beer, Rence : prefered drink of the rence growers of the Delta of the Vosk , it consist of the pith and crushed seeds of the rence plant, that have been steeped and fermented. Carpet plant : a plant of the rainforest area inland of Schendi, having tendrils that are sometimes used as a source of drinking water. Chocolate : same as the chocolate of Earth. It is made from beans brought back from one of the voyages of acquisition. Falarian Wine : a rare, fabulously expensive wine of exquisite taste. It's existence is only rumored among collectors. It's cost would purchase a city. Fermented Milk Curds : a Tuchuk drink, made from fermented bosk milk curds Ka-la-na : made from the fruit of the Ka-la-na tree ( its very strong yellow wood is also used to make bows), It is a very potent dry red wine that comes in varying quality, from that of a common table wine to the medium-grade wine (such as the 'Boleto's Nectar'), to the premium brands (such as the very expensive 'Slave Gardens of Anesidemus'). The city of Ar is particularly renouned for it's fine ka-la-na. Ka-la-na is reported to have an aphrodisiac effect on females. Kal-da : alcoholic beverage served hot . it is made of (usually cheap ) ka- la-na wine diluted with citrus juices ( tospit and larma) and mixed with strong spices. Similar to the muled wine or hot cider from earth. Popular in the kal-da shops of Tharna. Liana Vine : a rainforest plant which can be used as a source of drinking water. Mead : most popular in the northland, it is traditionally served in a horn. A drink made of fermented water, honey and spices. Milk : as on earth, the milk of a beast such as the bosk , the verr or the kaiila (see below Sand Kailla Milk) Mulled ka-la-na : ka-la-na wine that has been heated with mulling spices. It is served in a goblet, garnished with a some tospit or a piece of ka-la-na fruit. Paga : from the expression 'Pagar-Sa-Tarna' , which means 'pleasure of the life-daughter'. It is a hard liquor similar to earth's whiskey, also made from grains. Usually served in a footbowl, can be served cold or warm. Palm Wine : drink mentioned briefly; no description available. Sand Kailla Milk : as on earth, the milk of a beast, in this case that of the kaiila. It is reddish and salty because of its high content of ferrous sulfate. Slave Wine : a dark, vile tasting beverage given to the slave girls once a month as a contraceptive measure. It is brewed from bitter herbs and roots which gives it it`s less then pleasant taste. Its effects can be reversed by drinking some 'second wine' (see second wine below), which oddly enough is sweet tasting. Needless to say, this drink is never to be served to a Free. Second slave : a term used for the serving of black wine ( see black wine above). It refers to the drink being served without sugar or milk (as in coffe, black). It is refered to as such because of the custom to have the sugar and milk placed in the cup by a first slave before the beverage is poured into the cup by a second slave. Second wine : see breeding wine. Sip root : its extract is the main ingredient in slave wine. The bitter root can also be chewed on. -Book 18: Blood Brothers of Gor, page 319 Sul Paga : alcoholic beverage made from suls; similar to earth's vodka. Sul paga is NOT lumpy but a clear liquid. Ta-wine : made from Ta grapes, this dry wine is from the Isle of Cos. Usually served in a goblet, at room temperature, or warm. Tassa powder : a powerful supporific, reddish in color. Mixed with red wine so as not to be detected, it renders the consumer unconscious. Teslik : a plant whose extract is the active ingredient in breeding wine. -Book 18: Blood Brothers of Gor, page 320 Turian Liquer : a liqueur from Turia, considered the best on Gor . A thick syrupy wine, so sweet and thick that it is said one can see a thumbprint on its surface. Traditionally , served in tiny glasses. Water : Drinking water comes from one of thre sources : spring water from the mountains, from the liana vine or from the carpet plants from the rain forest area inland of Schendi. White Wine : a wine light in color and taste, it is not described in detail just as white wine.
