Godzilla vs. Gigan

(1972)

What we have here is your standard Godzilla flick, only this time the evil space aliens (this time from the Hunter Nebula) who want to rule the Earth are using a Monster Island based theme park as their front as they attempt to control Godzilla, using him to fulfill their evil plans. After their plans are achieved, they plan to blow up Monster Island and it's tenants! Their only resistance? A cartoonist/monster designer for the park, his black belt girlfriend, and a couple of hippies... Damn it! This is corny BEYOND limits I can tolerate! I mean, it features Godzilla and his little bitch Anguiras (or whatever they call him this time) having a conversation, translated into English audio distortion! My head hurts... Anyway, G sends Angy to the mainland to scout out the scene for him, but what he gets is a barrage of missiles and laser fire form the military, so he says fuck it (though it's not translated like the other monster conversations) and retreats home to get G for back up. So, with their plans to control Godzilla foiled by the do-gooder hippies, the aliens call in their own muscle: Ghidrah (yep, as in THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER) and Gigan (a spiky, tusked, one-eyed galloot... with sickle-like arms and a buzzsaw in his stomach.... trust me, I'm being serious!)! We learn that humans are simply "uniforms" for the aliens, as their true form is revealed to be... large, evolved cockroaches! Gigan lays waste to a bunch of toy building, as does Ghidrah (through the magic of gratuitous stock footage), and as always, the Japanese military is... well, you know the drill. Elsewhere, G and A swim to the mainland, once again conversing in English. Finally, after trouncing the Land of the Rising Sun for an extended period of time, Ghidrah and Gigan are finally confronted by Godzilla and Anguiras at the harbor, and the 20 minutes tag team ass-whoopin begins! After rock tossin', more gratuitous GHIDRAH stock footage, and Anguiras showing us just why he's considered the little bitch of the big rubber monster genre, G and A beat out the bad guys amongst a city of giant mushroom buildings, sending them running, with the help of their hippy allies... and the fact that space cockroaches are so ignorant as to mistake life-sized drawings for real people is just sick, when they COULD control Gigan and Ghidrah! What's that say about outer giant space monsters?! Bet they sure feel like assholes now! I learned three things from this film: 1) Monster language should NOT be translated to English. 2) Cartoonists and hippies are superior to cockroaches. Finally, 3) Ghidrah is getting on in years! In this installment, he had those nasty looking sideburns that sickly old Italian men get! Get a haircut, boy!

Also Known As: GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND

Sequels: Actually, the older series of Godzilla flicks never really connected with each other, so I guess they're technically not sequels...
