the Kindred

(1987)

As this movie opened, I pondered the question of, "how smart is it to build a house in the middle of a highway?". What brought this on? Well, the opening scene, in which a car crashes into a house that has fallen in the center of the road, could've had something to do with it... Well, to top it off, the sap who was in the wreck gets ambulance jacked! Actually, the ambulance driver willingly gave up the guy, because Dr. Philip Lloyd is paying him to supply fresh meat for the doc's experiments. Later on, the driver is fed to the doc's mutants, but that's not important... actually, nothing in this movie is important! But, I'll review it anyway. Well, we are soon introduced to Dr. John, our "hero", who is searching for Anthony, his apparent brother. After Dr. John's mom (Dr. Mom) dies, he checks out her house along with his punk-ass medical school pals. It turns out that "Anthony" is what Dr. Mom named her hybrid creature, created from splicing Dr. John's genes with those of an animal. She's been trying to hide it from the evil Dr. Lloyd, but he's got a narc planted in the gang in the form of Melissa, a supposed fan of Dr. Mom's work, who's also trying to hide "Anthony" from the rest of the group. But, the kids find out, try to fry "Anthony", then it slimes Dr. Lloyd and drags him into the basement, so he can't shoot anyone... damn "Anthony"! Uhm, then the group stumbles onto a whole nest of lil' "Ant honeys" in the basement, so they blow up the house. I was very pissed to see that there were 5(!) survivors! 5! 2 or 3 maybe, 4 at the most, but NEVER are there 5 survivors! The dialogue of this movie gave me a brain clot, and the extent of the puppeteering FX consisted of the lil boogers bouncing up and down and sometimes flailing their arms... I'd say that the best part was when one of the girls was graphically assaulted by her watermelon, but other than that, this thing sucked. Kill it! Burn it! Send it to Disneyland!
