Beware: Kangaroos! | |||||||||||

It's probably THE single traffic sign that's most typical for a particular country. (But then, Australia is a whole continent, rather than a country). Austra and Australia have a special relationship. Our country is all too often mixed up with Australia, especially by people of moderate geographical knowledge as they abound some 10.000 km to the west (many a letter only reached us after a long and exciting journey via Melbourne or Sydney). We are so used to our country being confounded with Australia that you can actually buy stickers here that say "No Kangaroos in Austria!" Did you know that it is the latin term "australis", meaning "to the South" that is the common ingredient to both names? Why should Austria be considered to lie to the South? If you know the answer, deposit it in the guest book, please. |
