The 6th Annual|
Hawgs For Dogs Benefit Run
Mother nature was good to us. After rain last year, we had a beautiful, sunny, summer like day for the 6th Annual Hawgs For Dogs "All Harley" Poker Run, and again the rides of the Bay Area did not disappoint. Registration began at 9:00am and by 10:00am there were already about 100 people registered. We ended up with about 250 registrations total including large numbers from the Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Fremont, and other Bay Area chapters of The Harley Owners Group. Everyone was treated to coffee and donuts and sign-in, and there were some puppy trainers there to answer questions about how the dogs are trained.
As the day warmed, riders were treated to a beautiful ride out Woodside Road to the first poker stop at Applejacks. After having their poker cards punched, and a little refreshments, it was on to to Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero for another stamp on their poker cards and maybe a little more refreshments. Then it was back on the road out Highway 1 (a perfect day for a ride along the coast) to the main celebration site Skinny McDoogles in Santa Cruz.
Once again Skinny's put on a great tri-tip bar-b-que dinner. Then it was time to dance the afternoon away to the music of Native Tongue, Passion, and the headline group The Lucas Michaels Band (if you've never heard of this band, I highly recommend it) who had the crowd really hopping. Between sets from the band, some great raffle prizes were given away, including a hand-painted Emu egg, a Harley Davidson Fatboy pocketwatch, a leather jacket (donated by Dudley Perkins Harley Davidson of San Francisco), and of course our usual grand prize - an all expense paid trip for two to Las Vegas.
When it was over we had managed to raise over $8000.00 for the Guide Dogs Of America, exceeding our expectations.
On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their time, donations, and hard work which made this years run a huge success. But most of all I would like to thank the Harley riders for their support year after year. We are already starting to plan this years run for October 2000 and hope it will be even bigger and better than this years. We are also planning some other events for the upcoming summer so keep an eye on the Thunder Press or visit our websites calendar for upcoming dates, times, and location. We hope to see y'all soon, till then ride safe.
