Harlan Community Academy Library-Mission Statement

The Mission of the Library Media Center is to ensure that students become effective users of information. To accomplish this, library staff collaborates with classroom teachers to integrate library resources across the curriculum. We use Mike Eisenberg and Big6 Skills Research Model(Big6) aligned to The information Literacy Standards for Student Learning (published the American Association of School Librarians) to inform our instruction when teaching the research process.

The Big6 research model is divided into six skills Beginning with Standard I: The student who is information literate accesses information effectively and efficiently.
Students who have mastered Standard I are able to:

  • Recognize the need for information beyond personal knowledge
  • Ask questions of him/her self to help understand the assignment
  • Plan an information seeking strategy to locate information

To help students achieve Standard I, they are referred to an Assignment Orangizer modeled after Mike Eisenburg Big6 Skills Model. Assignment Organizer
