In my work I am continually made aware of the lack of peace in this world. This is present in families, between families, in neighborhoods, in communities, in schools, at work and basically between all people. There is an inherent lack of respect for each other. The morals of a world that have made money, things and power their gods; have been corrupted. The violence we have seen in schools in the last year or so, does it surprise us? It shouldn't! The school is just a mirror image of the world in which it exists.
When I talked about being a "spiritual warrior", I talked about White Buffalo Calf Woman. If you take the opportunity to understand her coming you will understand why it pertains to our current situation.
In working with women and children who have been the victims of domestic violence or sexual assault I see on a very personal level how violence is corrupting our world. The most important gifts that we have are our children and yet if we were to examine how we protect them (or the total opposite), we would be sadly lacking.
I have gone into the high schools and asked the young people there if they want to be happy and have someone that they can love who loves them. That's what we all want. However, how can children learn when most of their parents don't know that answer. We have become protectionist and self focused.
Now you notice we are back to the beginning of the circle. If we all saw ourselves as part of the same "web of life" or "circle" we would "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This brings us to another very surprising thought. The "web of life" or "circle" theory is native, the "do unto others..." is Christian. We're not so different after all. All we really want is "peace".
To bring peace to the world today we need to honor each other and find value in the gifts that each of us have to bring. We should celebrate the differences, not find fault in them.
