The Coffin Family
Many thanks to Anne Patten Oliver for sending the information on this page.
I have COFFINs in my family from Newfoundland. There were alot of people who left NFLD and went to New England because of the fishery business.
Researching PATTEN, ANTHONY, BENDLE, BUFFETT, COFFIN, FOOTE, FORSEY, HICKMAN, HOLLETT, NICHOLLE, RICE, ROSE, TIBBO, WELSH and WAREHAM in Grand Bank, Fortune, Rabbit's Arm (Robert's Arm), Friday's Bay & Haystack, Newfoundland, Canada; Jersey, The Channel Islands; England, Wales, and the World.
Here's a better look at
my COFFIN family. Be prepared for a long read, it's 26 pages and I
only went 8 generations. A bunch of it is the English side, so maybe
you can find something interesting.
Kind regards,

Notes
for ROBERT COFFIN:
12-10-98
You
probably noticed on the Project 21 page (where the Nfld 1921 census is
found)
that there will soon be posted a list of subscribers to the Nfld
Church
Society back in the 1850's and 1860's. So far they've posted just
one
or two years for the communities in that interest us. I couldn't wait
longer
and went to the Centre for Nfld Studies at our main university
library
and viewed the whole thing on microfilm. There's not much new
there
as far as the Coffins go, but I think we can further narrow down the
death
date of Robert Coffin. He is listed every year for many years as a
subscriber
in Haystack, including the year 1872. From 1873 on, it is Mrs.
Coffin
who is listed. These June 30, 1873 subscriber report covers the
previous
year 1872, so I think we can conclude that Robert died in late
1871
or early 1872.

You
might also be interested to know that your gg-grandfather Samuel was
living
in Spencer's Cove (just across the island from Haystack) during
1871,
1872, 1873 and 1874 (the last year of the reports). He had been
living
in Haystack and listed as a subscriber there during all of the
1860's.
Harriet is also listed with him in 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874. Also
listed
as subscribers in Spencer's Cove are Adelaide Coffin (1871 and
1872),
Anne E. Coffin (1872, 1873, 1874)---who would she be? They are not
listed
in the regular church contribution lists for Haystack or Spencer's
Cove
(separate contribution lists which I have) after 1874. Is that the
time
they went to White Bay? Maybe by tracing the church contribution
records
we can follow them around!

Notes
for GEORGE RICE:
Apparently
Auntie Min was a sickly child, and the doctor said they should move away from
the ocean to a drier climate. Hence to New York where Auntie Glad was
born(1907). Went to Toronto after that, probably for work. George worked on a
dredge in the Toronto Harbour along with Sim Patten. A terrible storm washed
George overboard and he drowned. This happened at Cherry Beach, and his body
was later found near Sunnyside Beach, (about 10 miles away) a month later.
Gladys was only 8 years old(1915). Joyce Legrow May 12, 1995

There
you have the list as I have it. When I go to Toronto next, I will
spend
some more time with the books. I think when Meta [mother] disappears
from
393 in the mid 40's, she is in Hamilton. Seems to me I have some
records
of that time.
Quite
the tale. Now I tried to find entries for George Rice, but could not.
Interesting
that the last entry picks up Chesley. Anyway, food for thought.
I
should ask Aunt Ruby about her work and also the others. Some time, right!
Entry
by Henrietta (Reta) Patten Holten 12 Aug. 97:
You
were asking me the type of work my father did in Toronto.
He
worked on the dredges when they built the cement breakwater
down
at the exhibition in Lake Ontario. My dad was what they
call
a Hoisting Engineer and he had his papers to do this job so
he
worked at Concrete Pipe Co after he worked on the dredges too.
I
think Grandpa Rice must have worked on the Dredges too because
he
was drowned off one of them before I was born or when I was
very
young.
Dad
tried to save Grandpa Rice when he fell overboard at
the
time but was unable to do so. I don't think Jimmy would know
anything
about dad because he was just a young kid . He knew
Dad
worked at Concrete Pipe. During the Depression dad sold
vegetables
off his truck to make money in order to feed the
family.
I don't know what he did in Grand Bank but I think he
worked
with fishing boats.. I trust this is what you want.

From Tom and Joyce Legrow
We got the news last night
(late) that Bob Freeman had died early
Thursday morning. The funeral is
next Tuesday in Kitchener at their
church St. Alloisius. Also
Joyce's brother Len had another heart attach
about ten days ago. H was in the
hospital for a week before we knew. He
went home Friday but looks like
his days at work might have ended.
Please pass this info on to your
mom.
Love to all
Tom and Joyce
12 Jan 2000
From Tom Legrow
We were at Bob Freeman's funeral
yesterday. It was a very moving time,
especially when we along with
friends and family spent some time
together in the lower hall at
the Church. What a close wonderful family
they are. Each of the kids spoke
and there was not a dry eye in the
place. Joyce's brother Len was
suppose to go with us. The night before
he phoned and informed us he had
a bit of a relapse, had gone back to
the hospital but did have to
stay over night. He thought he might have a
touch of the flue as well as the
heart problem. We took Cindy to lunch
today and when we got home there
was a message on the phone telling us
that Len had died this morning
at approximately 9 a.m. Joyce is OK but
you can understand her tears.
Please let your mom and the rest know.

and there was not a dry eye in the
place.
