Jacob Grubb of Grayson Co. Virginia
Research is ongoing for my great grandfather Andrew Jackson Grubb concerning a
number of questions which arise when sorting out the at least two men named
Andrew Jackson Grubb who were within five years in age of each other and who
were in the same area of Grayson County, Va. I think there is also another
Andrew Jackson Grubb of the same age group in North Carolina, maybe Rowan or
Davidson County. The Grayson men are:
Andrew Jackson Grubb ["Jack"; "A. J."], born 20 Feb 1836, son of Jacob, married Elizabeth Egner
Andrew Jackson Grubb, born 17 Sep 1838, son of William, married Martha Boyer
Perhaps the best way to update your website is to simply remove the "killed at
Ft. Donalson" for the Andrew Jackson Grubb born 20 Feb 1836, married Elizabeth
Egner 1870. The reason for this will be clear as you read on.
ERROR in DATA: For those of us interested in Confederate ancestors the error in
data on Andrew Jackson "Jack" Grubb leaps from the webpage. If he were killed at
Ft. Donelson [ca 1861-1865] he could not have married in 1870.
DEATH RECORD: I have a certified copy of the death certificate of A. Jackson
Grubb [aka Jack, A.J.], widowed, born 20 Feb 1836 Va son of Jacob Grubb born
N.C. and Nellie Richardson born N. C. He died 1 July 1921 Rockholds, Whitley
County, Kentucky, of Tuberculous of Lungs. The informant was James Smith,
Rockholds, Ky., who may be the husband of Jack's daughter Cora. Jack's burial is
listed as 2 July 1921, Smith Cemetery. [SOURCE: Death Certificate of A. Jackson

MARRIAGE: I do not have documentation of his marriage to Elizabeth "Lizzie"
Egner, born 15 Feb 1846 Kentucky, died 23 June 1918. I have her death
certificate showing cause of death Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The informant for her
death was Cora Smith of Rockholds, Ky. There was no entry for Place of Burial.
MILITARY SERVICE:
Using information from a letter from Edgar Egner descendant of Jack and Lizzie
Grubb, Whitley Co., Ky, I obtained Jack's pension file. On 30 Aug 1912 Andrew
Jackson Grubb, Whitley County, Kentucky, filed Soldier's Application for Pension
No. 1327 with State of Kentucky. He states he was a soldier from the State of Va
and a member of Co. C 45 Va Regt Inf and that he was borned in Grayson Co. Va in
the year of 1836. "I enlisted in Co. C 45 Va Regt Va Inf in the year 1861.
Served under Col Wm Brown and Edd Harman my captains Name was M. B. Cox". "I
walked out when we Surrendered. I was then in Withe Co Va this was in the year
of 1865." He stated that he had been a resident of Kentucky "Since the date of

I would like to know how the Andrew Jackson Grubb who married Martha Boyer
signed his name and what name he "went by". What was his occupation before and
after the war? Do you have any research contacts who may know?
FAMILY TRADITION:
My father's sister, Dolly Opal Grubb Watson, age 91 and granddaughter of Andrew
Jackson Grubb born 1836, remembers visiting her grandfather in Whitley County,
Kentucky, when she was a child. She was age 10 when he died and so was old
enough to have some memories of him. She says that his Confederate uniform
always hung on the wall by the fireplace but after he died someone burnt it
because they thought it was junk.

I have a copy of an obit for Elizabeth "Aunt Betty" (Porter) Grubb wife of Conrad Grubb. ( This seems to change his name from Coonrod to Conrad). She was born 2-24-1828 in Grayson Co. VA. and died 4-17-1928, (living a little more than a 100 years) at the home of her daughter Mrs Worth Clark in Waynoda, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by several years by her two sons Clark and Isom. Her other child was a daughter. She is survived by 9 Grand children and Several Great Grand children. Her request was to be brought back to be buried beside her husband in the old Porter cemetery (old home place of Aunt Betty) now owned by Mr. Frank Grubb. This was written by one who knew her, Mittie R. Young, Grant, Va.
