Extract from the Boston Evening Transcript, 10.8.1885 (page 5)

The death of Ralph Emerson of this city, says the San Francisco Chronicle, removes from the community a gentleman whose past associations and remniscences were remarkable. Born in 1806 and of one of the best families of New England, his early life was passed with such brilliant companions as Hawthorne, Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Living in the home of his relative Ralph Waldo Emerson, they studied together while preparing for college and over their meals capped Greek verse. Graduating from Harvard, Mr Emerson went to Europe in 1828, and resided in Paris for more than 20 years, there being well known by all the distinguished Americans visiting Paris at that early period.

Among his friends in Paris were Morse, the electrician, then but experimenting with his wires, and J Fenimore Cooper. He was often entertained by General Lafayette, the friend of his father, and spent interesting hours at the Chateau La Grange, where the old hero would fight his battles over again to eager ears.

Mr Emerson leaves to mourn his loss and respect his memory a widow and daughter and son. Mr Emerson died at the good old age of seventy-nine years and five months.

6. Israel WORSLEY b. 1768, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England, occupation Minister, and Elizabeth Ker DENNY. Israel died 3 Sep 1836, Le Havre, France.

Israel Worsley went to the academy at Daventry, Northampton in 1786 whence he emerged with Unitarian views. In December 1790 he became minister to a group of English merchants at Dunkirk, France, where he established a school.

In 1793 on the outbreak of war, he returned to England, but returned to France on the short lived Piece of Amiens in 1802. He was arrested by the gendarmes on the outbreak of further hostilities and became a prisoner of the state. He was carried first to Mons, where he was imprisoned; and next to Verdun, described as "the receptacle of those Englishmen who had the means of supporting themselves without assistance of the Government."

On being released from his parole by ensuing circumstances. he contrived to make his escape in disguise and to cross the frontier and so at length to regain his wife and four young children in the Low Countries.

From 1806 to 1813 he was minister to the Unitarian congregation at Lincoln, and from 1813 to 1831 at Plymouth, Devon. He then returned to France and opened a place for Unitarian worship in Paris in June 1831, which was maintained for two years. He then returned to England and was minister again at Lincoln from 1833 until his death.

In 1836 he went to visit Caroline, his daughter, who had married Ralph Emerson in March of 1835; by which time there was a small grand daughter for him to dandle on his knee. He died on the 3 September 1836 and was laid to rest in the Protestant Burying Ground at Le Havre. - Source: Dictionary of National Biography. -

32. Joseph EMERSON bapt. 25 Jun 1620, Bishops, Stortford, Herts, England, occupation Minister, m. (1) 1646, Elizabeth WOODMANSEY, b. c1628, England, m. (2) 7 Dec 1665, in Ipswitch, Massachusetts, USA, Elizabeth BULKELEY, b. 1638, Concord, Massachusetts, USA, d. 12 Aug 1696, Reading, Massachusetts, USA. Joseph died 3 Jan 1680, Concord, Massachusetts, USA. (Return to 72 below).
Mr Emerson was a minister of the standing order of puritan clergymen. Of his education nothing is known. Tradition says he was educated in England and he may have studied at Harvard.

He was at Ipswitch as early as 1638, was admitted freeman there on the 19 December 1648 and he preached at York, Maine the same year.

He married Elizabeth Woodmansey in about 1646, the daughter of Robert and Margaret Woodmansey, a schoolmaster who resided in Boston.

In 1653, he was a resident of Wells and took the freemans oath on the 4th July 1653. He was an inhabitant when the commissioners took the submission of the people, the court being held in his house. He favoured submission to Massachusetts in 1651/2 and was evidently a leading man of the Massachusetts Party. He signed a petition to Cromwell, which he probably wrote, asking the Protector to confirm the jurisdiction of Massachusetts over the inhabitants of Wells.

He soon lost his hold on the affections of the people of Wells; largely perhaps, because of the political dissension which disturbed the church. After Mr Emerson left, the church is said to have dwindled to two families, and they quarelled. Orders came from the Massachusetts government that the church disband. Orders quickly followed that the town be indicted for not maintaining public worship.

About 1664, he left Wells and became the first minister of Milton; asking for an increase of salary on account of his approaching marriage, he was dismissed.

He was settled in Mendon, 1 December 1669, where he remained until the town was destroyed by the Indians in King Phillip's war; then he retired to Concord, where he died.

He married his second wife, Elizabeth Bulkeley on the 7th December 1665 in Concord, Massachusetts.
