Harriet Josephine (Josie) Hill Phillips was the daughter of James Hill and
Nancy Dixon. In a letter to my grandfather, Marion Lowry Phillips, dated
March 17, 1968, Mattie Walker of Indiana describes her as follows:
"...I can remember seeing a picture of your grandmother (Harriet Josephine
Hill Phillips) among my grandmothers pictures and I've the records copied
from the Phillips Cemetery in Pickett County, Tenn...The only one of Grandma
Harriet Radford Hill's brothers or sisters my mother can remember seeing was
Aunt Lynn Campbell.(her name was Malinda Elizabeth) but Moma always called
her "Aunt Lynn". The year that Aunt Beth Phillips died Aunt Lynn came to
Pickett Co. to see her niece, Tabitha Phillips, and since Moma's older sister
had been named Elizabeth for Aunt Lynn-she-Aunt Lynn brought along
a new doll for little Elizabeth Ellen Brody(Brady?) Foster. She had not
known that the little girl had died in August prior to that November of her
visit. When told, she could think only of getting rid of the doll that
would remind the parents of the little child, of their loss--but your grand-
mother Harriett Josephine Hill Phillips (Aunt Josie)suggested she give the
doll to Minnie. Moma says that was the only store bought doll she ever had
and she was so grateful to Aunt Josie for remembering her....I expect you
and I are doubly related as
Elizabeth Tompkins who married
Samuel Phillips (2nd gt, grandparents-I believe)-or gt. grandparents- Elizabeth
was an older sister of my great grandfather Jenkins Tompkins."
