#2 message...I forgot..I also saw several wonder about where the Norwoods came from. Mrs. McSwain and my uncle Bartow said that they had their beginnings on the Isle of Sheppey. The original name was Jordanus. According to Mrs. McSwain, "Mrs. Marion No wood Callam of England, Jordanus of Sheppey was a son of King Harold and Edith Swannaschells......Jordanus married a lady named Cicely." It seems that their children carried the name de Northwode. (I have also been told that they lived in the North woo s of England and that is where the name came from) However, they ended up at Leckhampton. They are tied into the Lygon, Throgmorton, Gifford (from Kent), Elton, Berkeley and so on families. Sir Stephen de Northwode ca 1257, was son of Jordan de Shepey. I believe the name changed to Norwood sometime in the early 1400s. Hope this helps some know where they are from. Thanks again for the great pages.

Richard Your pages are fantastic. I can see that you have put a lot of time and effort into them. Thank you so much for sharing with the rest of us. I keep seeing things like, "My name is Norwood, do you think I may be related." To which I answer, my great un le Bartow always told me," if you are a Norwood in South Carolina, there is no question they are family. If in the United States, there is very little question that they are related." So there is very little doubt that all of y'all are cousins....grin The URL that I listed is the address of our genealogy chapter. I hope that you will check in sometime. Thanks again for a wonderful visit...pages are loaded with information. Thanks to all who shared.

My Norwood research goes back to N.C. & Va. in the 1780-1880 period. I do not know if they were descendants of Francis. My 1st Norwood info is on a WILLIAM Norwood married to Sarah Ann Thomas 1800 in Granville Co.,N.C. Their daughter, JANE, married John Harris & they appeared in the 1850 Mecklenburg, Va. census. Their daughter, Sarah Ann Harris married James T. Overbey in 1857 & they moved to Mobile, Al. after the Civil War. William had a brother named JORDAN & 2 sons named William E. & Phillip H.(all in Granville NC) Any info that you might have on these NORWOODS would be greatly apppreciated. Thanks, Beth Leney

May father's name: Noel Norwood, born in Forestdale, Alabama. Born to John Harrie and Avelle Hill-Norwood of Tallahatta Springs, Alabama I don't have the full names and places, beyond that with me. We have traced our ancestry to PA. The 1st Norwood coming from England as the Kings treasurer who returned to England when the war broke out and came back afterward. The research my family did was lost. Just poped in to check you out. I'm new at this.
